Quick answer: The official apprenticeship is 7,200 hours in most provinces and territories, 9,000 hours in Ontario and 9,800 hours in Quebec. At a full-time year of roughly 1,800 to 2,000 paid hours, 7,200 hours works out to about four years. After that you write the certification exam, which for most people is the Red Seal exam.

What changes how long it takes
- Your province: Ontario and Quebec require more hours than the 7,200 standard.
- Steady work: apprenticeship hours build up while you work as a registered apprentice, so gaps between jobs add time.
- School timing: technical training runs in levels, for example 40 weeks in total in British Columbia and 28 weeks in Ontario.
- Prior experience: experienced workers can challenge as trade qualifiers after 9,000 to 10,800 hours, depending on the province.
- The exam: 100 questions, four hours, 70 percent to pass.
