Electrician Requirements in Canada: Certification, Hours, Exam

On this page

Quick answer: In the ten provinces you must be a certified journeyperson or a registered apprentice to do electrical work, because Construction Electrician is a compulsory trade there. Certification needs a completed apprenticeship of 7,200 hours in most provinces, 9,000 in Ontario and 9,800 in Quebec, plus a written certification exam, usually the Red Seal exam with a 70 percent pass mark.

FAQ

Is a Red Seal required to work as an electrician in Canada?

Your provincial certificate is what certifies you. Most provinces use the Red Seal exam to issue it, so most newly certified electricians also receive the endorsement.

Is the electrician trade compulsory everywhere in Canada?

It is compulsory in all ten provinces and voluntary in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Can experienced electricians from abroad get certified?

Most provinces let experienced workers challenge the exam as trade qualifiers after proving 9,000 to 10,800 hours. Ask your provincial authority how it assesses experience from other countries.
