Quick answer: If you train in Australia, the answer is no: Victoria and New South Wales both build the licence on an apprenticeship or equivalent supervised work. The main exception is for people already trained overseas. Victoria accepts an Offshore Technical Skills Record plus gap training and a theory assessment. NSW issues a provisional tradesperson certificate for 3 years that cannot be renewed.
Routes that skip a local apprenticeship
| Route | Who it is for | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR), gap training, Certificate III, supervised worker licence and the LET | Overseas-trained workers in Victoria | Energy Safe Victoria |
| Provisional tradesperson certificate, issued for 3 years, not renewable | Overseas-trained applicants in NSW | NSW Government |
| Interstate pathway with an equivalent licence | Electricians licensed in another state | Energy Safe Victoria |
| New Zealand pathway under Trans-Tasman mutual recognition | Electricians licensed in New Zealand | Energy Safe Victoria |
If you are already an electrician overseas
- Obtain an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR), the credential Victoria lists for overseas-trained applicants.
- On arrival, apply for a provisional or supervised licence in your state.
- Finish the Australian context gap training and the Certificate III.
- Pass the remaining assessment, such as the Licensed Electrician’s Theory in Victoria.
- Apply for the full licence.
Practice for the electrician licence exam
This page covers the route into the trade. Licensing is run by each state, so for the exam itself our main page is the Australia electrician exam guide: the assessment format, the licensing authority, the wiring rules and the official links in one place.

The questions are original and follow Energy Safe Victoria’s Licensed Electrician’s Assessment and AS/NZS 3000; other states assess differently, so check your state regulator as well. FAQ
Can an adult career changer skip the apprenticeship?
Not in Victoria or NSW if you have no trade background. Adults can do the same apprenticeship, including part time in Victoria.
Does electrical engineering experience count?
Engineering degrees are not the listed pathway. Ask the regulator whether any of your experience counts before you enrol.
What if I finished the apprenticeship years ago but never got licensed?
Victoria has separate guidance for expired contracts, and NSW lists pathways for superseded qualifications within 5 years, sometimes with an assessment on AS/NZS 3000:2018.
