Become an Electrician With an Online Course in Australia? What Counts

On this page

Quick answer: You cannot become a licensed electrician in Australia through an online course alone. Victoria requires a Certificate III earned under a 4-year apprentice contract and will not accept a statement of attainment. New South Wales requires 12 months of paid wiring work. Online study can help with theory or preparation, but every state ties the licence to supervised work on real installations.

A realistic route if you start online

  1. Use online material to learn basic theory and the wiring rules vocabulary before applying for jobs.
  2. Apply to employers for an apprenticeship; that is the gate to the Certificate III.
  3. Complete UEE30820 with a registered training organisation, including the practical units.
  4. Pass your state step, such as the LEA in Victoria.
  5. Apply for the licence with employer letters that show your supervised work.

Practice for the electrician licence exam

This page covers the route into the trade. Licensing is run by each state, so for the exam itself our main page is the Australia electrician exam guide: the assessment format, the licensing authority, the wiring rules and the official links in one place.

Try the free Australia electrician practice test in your browser. The questions are original and follow Energy Safe Victoria’s Licensed Electrician’s Assessment and AS/NZS 3000; other states assess differently, so check your state regulator as well. The one-time Australia exam pack unlocks every Australia question and a printable PDF version, with no subscription.

FAQ

Are online electrician courses a scam?

Not necessarily, but a course that promises a licence without an apprenticeship or supervised work does not match what Victoria and NSW publish.

Can part of the Certificate III be studied online?

Delivery methods are set by each training organisation. The regulators care that you finish the full Certificate III under an apprentice contract.

Is there a faster route for adults?

Adults follow the same apprenticeship. Victoria notes apprenticeships can be full time or part time, which some career changers use.
