Quick answer: To become a qualified electrician in Australia you complete the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) as an apprentice, then meet your state licence rules. Victoria sets a 4-year contract, 12 months of installation work and the LEA. NSW adds a VTRP certificate and 12 months of wiring work. Queensland issues an electrical mechanic licence.

Practice for the electrician licence exam
This page covers the route into the trade. Licensing is run by each state, so for the exam itself our main page is the Australia electrician exam guide: the assessment format, the licensing authority, the wiring rules and the official links in one place.

FAQ
How many years does it take?
Victoria sets the apprentice contract at 4 years. Plan on roughly that long in other states too, then add time for the licence application.
Is qualified the same as licensed?
You hold the qualification after the Certificate III, but you can only work unsupervised once the state licence is issued.
Can I work for myself once qualified?
In Victoria you also need Registered Electrical Contractor status, and in Queensland a contractor licence.
