Quick answer: No short course alone gives you an electrical licence in Australia. The base is the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820), done as an apprentice. Each state then adds a step. Victoria needs the Licensed Electrician’s Assessment, passed within 5 years of applying. New South Wales needs a VTRP certificate of proficiency and 12 months of paid wiring work.

Order of steps
- Get an apprenticeship and enrol in UEE30820.
- Finish the Certificate III and keep the full certificate.
- Complete your state assessment, such as the LEA in Victoria.
- Collect employer letters that prove 12 months of installation or wiring work.
- Apply to the state regulator and pay the fee.

Is the LEA a course?
It is an assessment in three parts run by centres Energy Safe Victoria approves. Many people prepare through a trade school, but the licence depends on passing it.
Can I get an electrical licence from an online course?
None of the three states covered here issues a licence for an online course alone. Each asks for the Certificate III plus supervised or paid work.
Does NSW have a licence exam?
NSW says it may ask you to complete an assessment on the wiring rules AS/NZS 3000:2018 to confirm you can do or supervise electrical wiring work.
