Electrician Apprentice Qualifications in the UK: Entry and Exit

On this page

Quick answer: To start a UK electrician advanced apprenticeship you usually need 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, including English and maths, or an equivalent. There is no upper age limit. You finish with a Level 3 electrician apprenticeship, either Installation and Maintenance or Domestic Electrician. The ECS card then proves your status. For a T Level route, colleges ask for 4 or 5 GCSEs.

If you lack the entry grades

  1. Ask the provider which equivalent qualifications it accepts.
  2. Take a college course in electrical installation to build a record employers can see.
  3. Apply to electrical companies and the armed forces, which also train electricians through apprenticeships.
