Quick answer: An evening course can give you electrical theory while you keep a day job, but it will not make you a qualified UK electrician on its own. The National Careers Service says workplace experience and on-the-job training are still needed. If you already do electrical work, the Experienced Worker Assessment offers routes for people with 3 or 5 years of experience.
Where evening study fits
| Situation | Route | Source |
|---|---|---|
| New to the trade | College course (evening or day) then an apprenticeship or trainee job | National Careers Service |
| Working in electrics without Level 3 | Experienced Worker Assessment, 3 or 5 year routes | National Careers Service |
| Any age | Apprenticeships are open to all ages | National Careers Service |
| After qualifying | ECS card run by the JIB | ECS |
| Typical working week | 37 to 45 hours | National Careers Service |
Plan for career changers
- Take an evening electrical installation course to test your interest.
- Look for a trainee or apprentice role that adds workplace experience.
- Log your experience carefully if you plan to use the Experienced Worker Assessment later.
- Check any paid course before signing up, as the National Careers Service advises.

FAQ
Can I keep my job while training?
Evening study helps with theory, but qualification needs workplace experience, so most people switch to a trainee or apprentice role.
Is the Experienced Worker Assessment for beginners?
No. It is for people already working as electricians, with routes for 3 or 5 years of experience.
Do evening courses lead to an ECS card?
The card reflects your qualifications and experience, so a course alone is not enough.
