How the GI Bill works in an apprenticeship
- Who: you may be eligible if you qualify for the GI Bill and are a new employee training in an industry or job. Active-duty service members cannot use on-the-job training benefits. (VA)
- Pay: you still get a salary from the employer or union, and VA adds a monthly payment for living expenses. (VA)
- Amount: based on the housing allowance for an E-5 with dependents at your training ZIP code: 100% in months 1 to 6, 80% in 7 to 12, 60% in 13 to 18, 40% in 19 to 24, then 20%. VA reduces the payment for any month you work under 120 hours. (VA rates)
- Books: up to US$1,000 each academic year with the Post-9/11 GI Bill. (VA rates)
- Check the program: VA says to use its GI Bill Comparison Tool to confirm the employer’s training program is approved. (VA)
