E1 vs E2 vs E3: Map Your Electrical Study Gaps

Updated About 5 min read

ICC lists E1 as Residential Electrical Inspector, E2 as Commercial Electrical Inspector, and E3 as Electrical Plans Examiner.

Before choosing which to take first, consult the official outline and exam catalog to confirm the exam ID and code year.

Record your intended certification, reason for considering it, verification source, and date. Familiarity is not readiness to register.

Compare the titles, then verify the selected exam

Use ICC’s certification list for the titles below. The E1 store response offers code-cycle options labelled 2024 and 2021; ICC’s catalog guide says references reflect the code year selected for the exam listing.

Check your selected catalog listing before recording a code year. Do not carry an E1 code-cycle selection into another certification. Record each exact title, year, reference editions, and verification date.

Certification and Exam ID are shown in each heading.

Residential Electrical Inspector (E1)

  • Code cycle or year: Store options: 2024 or 2021. Confirm the selected catalog year.
  • Topic scope: General Requirements; Services; Branch Circuit and Feeder Requirements; Wiring Methods And Power and Lighting Distribution; Devices, Lighting Fixtures, and Appliances; Swimming Pools and Similar Installations
  • References: Open book. Check the selected listing for permitted materials and exact editions.
  • Official links: E1 outline; E1 store
  • Read date: 2026-10-22

Commercial Electrical Inspector (E2)

  • Code cycle or year: Confirm the selected catalog year.
  • Topic scope: Open the catalog Outline tab; no detailed topic list is reproduced here.
  • References: Verify permitted materials and editions in the selected listing.
  • Official links: Catalog guide
  • Read date: 2026-10-22

Electrical Plans Examiner (E3)

  • Code cycle or year: Confirm the selected catalog year.
  • Topic scope: Open the catalog Outline tab; no detailed topic list is reproduced here.
  • References: Verify permitted materials and editions in the selected listing.
  • Official links: Catalog guide
  • Read date: 2026-10-22

Use this comparison to collect a separate catalog record for each certification.

ICC’s catalog guide describes an Outline tab for major content and job tasks, and a References section for the material an exam is based on.

Choose a heading and its reference together. Keep E2 and E3 topic lists separate: open each certification’s own listing and build a fresh matrix rather than assuming residential topics cover it.

The rows below reproduce the six top-level topic headings from the E1 outline.

Mark current work, exposure you can describe, or topics to study from the beginning. Leave uncertain boxes blank and note what needs clarification. Do not total boxes or assign weights.

Print this E1 topic list or copy it into your notes.

One-page study-gap matrix

  • General Requirements: ☐ I work on this now ☐ I have seen it ☐ New to me. Study: E1 outline; my verified reference: ______
  • Services: ☐ I work on this now ☐ I have seen it ☐ New to me. Study: E1 outline; my verified reference: ______
  • Branch Circuit and Feeder Requirements: ☐ I work on this now ☐ I have seen it ☐ New to me. Study: E1 outline; my verified reference: ______
  • Wiring Methods And Power and Lighting Distribution: ☐ I work on this now ☐ I have seen it ☐ New to me. Study: E1 outline; my verified reference: ______
  • Devices, Lighting Fixtures, and Appliances: ☐ I work on this now ☐ I have seen it ☐ New to me. Study: E1 outline; my verified reference: ______
  • Swimming Pools and Similar Installations: ☐ I work on this now ☐ I have seen it ☐ New to me. Study: E1 outline; my verified reference: ______

Personal study notes only. Save this matrix as one page and add your own reference locations.

In “Source to study,” enter the reference title and edition you verified, followed by a chapter or section to revisit. Keep private project details out of your notes. If your experience feels broad but your source field is empty, make reference verification your next action. If a topic is entirely new, choose a small reading task and write down the question you want that reading to resolve.

Make each source note easy to find again: add the document title, selected edition, heading, and your own question. Try “Find the relevant section and explain why I chose it.” Keep personal study separate from workplace decisions and leave room for corrections.

Turn the gaps into a study sequence

Choose one row for your next study session. Write a plain goal, such as locating the relevant heading in your verified reference and explaining what you still need to understand. After reading, date your note and describe what changed. Keep unresolved questions visible. Ask a qualified instructor or workplace supervisor to help clarify your learning needs, without treating a checked box as their approval of your competence.

Before moving from residential study to another certification, return to that certification’s catalog listing. Copy its outline headings into a separate record and repeat the same exposure check. Keep your reason for choosing that certification beside the record. Use your notes to choose the next topic to study, and revisit the sequence when your goal or selected exam year changes.

At your next review, compare the new note with the question you wrote before studying. If you still cannot locate or explain your source, keep that row on your study list. Write the next action beside it rather than replacing the uncertainty with a checkmark.

Pick your first exam from the job you want

No fixed E1/E2/E3 order fits every goal. Check your target job's credential and post-hire deadline.

El Paso's Electrical Inspector posting requires a Journey or Master Electrician License at application and ICC Commercial Electrical Inspector certification within 1 year of appointment (read on 2026-10-23).

Austin's Distributed Energy Electrical Inspector class description (data as of June 15, 2025) requires a Texas Master Electrician License and residential and commercial electrical inspector certification or Electrical inspector general certification from ICC or IAEI within 6 months of hire (read on 2026-10-23).

Waco's 2025 Electrical Inspector posting lists ICC Building Electrical Inspector or Residential Electrical Inspector certification within one year; its minimum qualifications omit a Journeyman/Master license (read on 2026-10-23).

City inspector jobs can require a Texas Journeyman or Master license plus ICC certification. Compare both before applying.

Before you register

  • Copy your target job's certification name and deadline into your study-gap matrix.

Confirm the exact certification title and exam ID in ICC’s current catalog. Select the intended code year, then verify every reference title, edition, and rule about materials you may bring. Read the relevant outline again and compare it with your saved study record. Resolve missing or conflicting information with ICC before proceeding.

Check ICC’s current price and available testing method for your selected listing. Record the date of that check, and review the purchase conditions before making a decision. Recheck these details when you return to register; avoid relying on a saved article or an old screenshot for the final selection.

Save your chosen certification, verified source, and next study action together. Keep the matrix for your next review and update it as your learning progresses.
