Quick answer: The course that leads to an electrician licence in Australia is the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820), done inside an apprenticeship. Victoria sets the apprentice contract at 4 years and adds a Licensed Electrician’s Assessment. New South Wales also asks for 12 months of paid wiring work. A short course or a statement of attainment on its own does not qualify you.
What each state accepts
| State | Course and extra steps | Source |
|---|---|---|
| New South Wales | UEE30820 (or UEE30806, UEE30807, UEE30811), a VTRP certificate of proficiency and 12 months of wiring work under AS/NZS 3000:2018 | NSW Government |
| Victoria | Certificate III inside a 4-year apprentice contract, 12 months of installation work, and the LEA | Energy Safe Victoria |
| Victoria | A statement of attainment or statement of results is not accepted; the full Certificate III is | Energy Safe Victoria |
| Queensland | Apprentices move to an electrical work licence when they finish; the electrical mechanic licence covers all electrical work | Business Queensland |
How to get into the course
- Find an employer who will sign you on as an apprentice electrician. Victoria says you need an employer and a signed contract before you can enrol.
- Enrol in UEE30820 with a registered training organisation that your employer uses.
- Log your on-the-job hours and pass every unit at the trade school.
- Finish the extra state step: the LEA in Victoria, or the VTRP certificate and 12 months of wiring work in New South Wales.
- Apply to your state regulator for the licence.

This page covers the route into the trade. Licensing is run by each state, so for the exam itself our main page is the Australia electrician exam guide: the assessment format, the licensing authority, the wiring rules and the official links in one place.

FAQ
Can I do an electrician course without an apprenticeship?
You can study some theory, but Victoria only lets you enrol in the Certificate III once you are signed under an apprentice contract, and all three states tie the licence to supervised work.
How long is the electrician course in Australia?
Victoria sets the apprentice contract at 4 years. The course runs across that period alongside paid work.
Is the course the same in every state?
The national code is the same (UEE30820). The licence steps after it differ by state, which is why the table lists NSW, VIC and QLD separately.
