Electrical Drawing Symbols for Lighting, Receptacles and Controls: How to Read Them

Updated About 3 min read

Start with the symbol legend on the drawing set, not with a chart from the internet. Designers use similar symbols for receptacles, switches and light fixtures, but each set defines its own, and letters next to a symbol often point to a fixture schedule or a note. Find the legend, the schedules and the general notes first, then read the plan.

How a lighting and power plan is usually read

  • Legend. Shows each symbol and what it means on this job: receptacle types, switch types, fixtures and controls.
  • Schedules. A fixture schedule lists each fixture type by letter or tag. A panel schedule shows which circuit feeds what.
  • Notes. General and keyed notes add mounting heights, device colors and other details the symbol alone does not show.
  • Circuit marks. Circuit numbers and connecting lines may show circuit assignments or control relationships. Check the legend and notes, and ask your journeyman before you treat a drawn line as a wiring route.

Printreading books for electrical drawings

Starting your first year as a Texas apprentice? The US$19 Texas First-Year Electrical Apprentice Kit gives you printable pages for the first months on the job: a tool-check card, a who-to-ask list with a short stop-and-ask script, emergency-contact and heat-and-rest cards, plus a Tool budget sheet and a Tool inventory sheet (CSV).

Log your Texas Journeyman hours free. A free Tsai Electro account keeps your supervised hours, your online practice scores and your exam date in one place. Start with a five-question check to see which topic to practice next.

Books teach the common conventions. Use the legend to read the symbols on your job drawings, and check the specifications, notes and applicable code before you treat a detail as an installation instruction.
