How to Use the NEC Index and Cross-References to Find a Rule

Updated About 3 min read

Start with the NEC index or table of contents, open the referenced article or section, and follow printed cross-references before settling on an answer. An NFPA committee report states that both the index and table of contents can lead a code user to the appropriate article. TDLR states that the Texas electrician examination is open book and permits the 2026 National Electrical Code as a reference.

The current PSI bulletin states, “NEC books may be tabbed with permanent index tabs manufactured and/or provided by the NEC book publisher.” It also states, “Candidates are NOT permitted to have their NEC books tabbed with homemade, DIY, or non-NEC tabs.”

TDLR states that a soft-bound edition may be used and that loose-leaf, spiral-bound or ring-bound NEC copies are not allowed in the examination room.

Checked against NFPA, TDLR exam information, and the PSI bulletin updated September 15, 2026 on October 17, 2026.

A short lookup routine

  1. Choose the noun in the question and check the index.
  2. Open the cited article or section.
  3. Follow printed cross-references.
  4. Write down the final section before checking the answer.
