ICC CE and Local Rules: Keep a Renewal Evidence Ledger

Updated About 4 min read

ICC publishes credential renewal rules, including a three-year validity period and a requirement to renew by the expiration date. ICC renewal bulletin.

Ask your department which employer or jurisdiction requirements also apply, then keep its answers separate from ICC evidence so neither set of requirements gets overlooked.

Start your continuing education record with the credential you actually hold. Write its name, current status, and expiration date above your ledger. Keep the department's written instructions beside that record, clearly labeled with their source. Use this page as an organizing method for your Texas electrical inspector career, and consult the current ICC bulletin for the rules governing your credential.

What ICC requires

For a renewal of 1 credential, the bulletin lists 1.5 CEUs in total, including at least 0.8 Part 1 CEUs. ICC renewal bulletin.

Find the row that matches the credentials you intend to renew. Record both the total and the Part requirement in your planning notes. Before choosing an activity, check its category against the bulletin's accrual options rather than treating every completed course as interchangeable.

ICC counts eligible CEUs from the three years immediately before renewal processing, and separate renewal applications each require their own full CEU amount. ICC renewal bulletin.

Use the intended processing date when checking your activity dates. Do not assume an older completion belongs in the current application. If your credentials have different dates, mark which application each activity supports and review the bulletin before deciding how to group your renewals.

ICC requires documentation for each continuing education activity, and renewals may be audited for proof of CEUs. ICC renewal bulletin.

Keep the actual evidence beside your ledger. For each completed activity, save the completion record and use the same file name in the ledger. Open the saved file while making the entry and check the participant, activity, provider, completion date, and credit shown. Ask the issuer to clarify missing information instead of filling it in yourself.

What your employer or jurisdiction may add

Ask your supervisor or the person responsible for department training to identify the current written requirements for your role. Request the policy title, its effective date, the responsible contact, and any form used to record completion. Ask separately about employer expectations and jurisdiction requirements. If another office owns the answer, ask for that office's contact and document title.

Request written clarification of the deadline, accepted activities, evidence format, and who confirms completion. Ask whether the department accepts the particular activity you are considering for its own requirement. Keep the reply with the policy and record the source in your planning notes. Leave uncertain entries marked for confirmation; avoid turning a colleague's informal answer into a department rule.

Treat ICC, employer, and local acceptance as separate checks. When asking about a course, name the specific requirement you want it to satisfy. Request confirmation from the body responsible for that requirement. In the ledger, record only the acceptance you have verified, and keep any unanswered question outside your completed-credit total until it is resolved.

Your recurring evidence ledger

Copy the blank entry into your working record. Enter the completion date, activity title, and provider as shown on the evidence. In Hours or CEUs, include the unit printed on the record; keep hours and CEUs distinct. In Counts toward, identify the requirement supported and refer to the saved confirmation in your notes. Use the final field for the next renewal date you have verified.

Copy this entry once for each course or activity.

  • Date: ______
  • Course or activity: ______
  • Provider: ______
  • Hours or CEUs: ______
  • Counts toward (ICC / employer / local): ______
  • Proof file name: ______
  • Next renewal date: ______

Keep the entry free of guessed credit, sample completions, or provisional approvals. Add an entry after completing the activity and obtaining evidence. If you are still planning a course, put it in a separate planning note with the question that needs answering. Name proof files consistently enough that you can locate each file from its ledger entry without searching through an inbox.

A dated course-price example

For Passing the Electrical Inspection, the listed price on 2026-10-22 was $59. Dated course listing.

Use that listing only as a dated budgeting example. Before paying for any course, check its current price, activity category, credit statement, and suitability for the requirement you are trying to meet. Confirm acceptance separately with your department where needed. Choose according to the gap in your verified record; this example is not a provider recommendation.

Keep the record current

Choose a recurring calendar reminder to review the ledger. At each review, open the proof files, compare the completed activities with your renewal plan, and revisit unresolved acceptance questions. Check whether your department has issued an updated policy. Write the next action beside each gap, with the person or document needed to resolve it. Set a reminder early enough to act before the verified deadline.

Before preparing a renewal, check the current bulletin again. Compare your activity dates with the applicable renewal window, review the required credit categories, and assemble the evidence referenced in your ledger. Keep a separate note of any application or department confirmation you receive. Close this step with a dated record and a specific next review action, rather than a folder of unlabelled certificates.
