Short answer: Leaving an apprenticeship does not automatically erase your documented work experience, but whether those hours count toward a Texas Journeyman license or another apprenticeship depends on the applicable requirements and verification. Two systems are involved. TDLR looks at on-the-job training under a Texas Master Electrician for the Journeyman license. Credit toward completing a registered apprenticeship is separate: under 29 CFR 29.5, a transfer requires agreement between the apprentice and the apprenticeship sponsors, must remain in the same occupation, and requires a transcript of related instruction and on-the-job learning, with a new apprenticeship agreement signed with the receiving sponsor. Settle your program status in writing before your last day.
Starting your first year as a Texas apprentice? The US$19 Texas First-Year Electrical Apprentice Kit gives you printable pages for the first months on the job: a tool-check card, a who-to-ask list with a short stop-and-ask script, emergency-contact and heat-and-rest cards, plus a Tool budget sheet and a Tool inventory sheet (CSV).
Log your Texas Journeyman hours free. A free Tsai Electro account keeps your supervised hours, your online practice scores and your exam date in one place. Start with a five-question check to see which topic to practice next.
Tsai Electro is an independent learning site. Not affiliated with TDLR or any apprenticeship program. This is general information, not legal advice; your apprenticeship agreement and program standards decide the details.
Before you leave the program
Before-you-leave checklist
Check an item only when it is done. The checklist counts what you have done; it does not confirm that a transfer is approved or that any record will be accepted.
- I know my total hours in the program, with start and end dates
- I saved pay stubs or W-2s that show my dates of employment
- I know the name and license number of each Master Electrician who supervised me
- I told my sponsor I plan to leave or transfer and asked how my exit will be recorded
- I asked my program for a transcript of my related instruction and on-the-job learning
- I asked the new program, in writing, whether it will accept my transfer and what credit it would give
- I read my apprenticeship agreement for any rule about leaving, tuition or repayment
- I know whether I am still in probation
Three situations, three different questions
| Situation | What to expect | What to get |
|---|---|---|
| Same program, new contractor | If you stay in the same apprenticeship program but change contractors, ask your sponsor whether the move is permitted and how your employment and training records will be handled | Written confirmation from your sponsor |
| Different registered program | Under 29 CFR 29.5 you receive a transcript; the receiving sponsor evaluates applicable prior experience and training under its registered standards, and a new agreement is signed | Transcript of related instruction and on-the-job learning, and the new program’s credit decision in writing |
| Leaving without transferring | Verified qualifying hours may still support a later Texas Journeyman application. Leaving the program ends your active participation, but a future sponsor may evaluate your previous training and experience for credit under its standards | Written note of your program status, your transcript and your hours records |
During the probationary period, either the apprentice or sponsor may cancel the apprenticeship agreement without cause. Under 29 CFR 29.5, probation cannot exceed 25% of the program term or one year, whichever is shorter.

Applying to a different program? If you are applying to a different program, the Texas Electrical Apprenticeship Entry Kit includes information on 13 Texas apprenticeship programs checked against their official websites, a 7-day start plan, aptitude practice, timed simulations and interview preparation. It does not evaluate transfer eligibility or preserve apprenticeship credit. Launch price US$49 through November 30, 2026, one payment, instant download.
What happens to my apprenticeship status if I quit before completing the program?
Leaving ends your participation in that program unless an approved transfer or other arrangement applies. Ask your sponsor for written confirmation of your status and training records. Your documented experience may still be relevant to TDLR licensing or credit decisions by a future sponsor.
Can I transfer to another electrical apprenticeship program?
It depends on agreement between you and the sponsors. Under 29 CFR 29.5 a transfer stays in the same occupation, you receive a transcript of your related instruction and on-the-job learning, and a new agreement is signed with the receiving sponsor. Federal rules require credit to be granted consistently to qualified applicants, with wages appropriate to the credit awarded. A transcript does not guarantee the same year or wage step.
Does program credit count as TDLR licensing hours?
They are separate decisions, though the same supervised work can matter to both. Program credit sets your place in an apprenticeship under the sponsor’s standards. TDLR licensing looks at on-the-job training under a Texas Master Electrician, verified on an Experience Verification Form when you apply. Credit in one system does not automatically decide the other.
