Can I Trust This Online Electrical Answer? Check the NEC Edition, the Source and the Job (Checklist)

Updated About 4 min read

Short answer: Before you use an answer from a forum, a video or an AI chat, check three things: which NEC edition it was written for, whether it names a section you can open and read yourself, and whether the situation in the answer matches your job. Texas electrician exams from September 1, 2026 are referenced to the 2026 NEC, and TDLR adopted the 2026 NEC for work in Texas from the same date, so an answer from an older edition needs checking. On the job, your supervisor and the permit office have the final word, not the internet.

Online answer checklist

Check each item that is true for the answer you found. This scores how checkable the answer is; it does not tell you whether it is correct.

  • It says which NEC edition it uses
  • That edition is the 2026 NEC
  • It names a section or table
  • I opened that section in my code book
  • The code book says what the answer says
  • It fits my job: dwelling or not, indoor or not
  • It fits my wire, size and equipment
  • It does not depend on an exception I skipped
  • It is not only one person’s opinion
  • I asked my supervisor before using it on a job

Why each check matters

CheckWhat can go wrong
EditionSections move and requirements change between editions. An answer written for an older NEC can point to the wrong section or an old rule.
Section you can openAn answer with no section cannot be checked. A section number lets you read the exact words and any exceptions.
Your own readingAnswers often leave out a condition, a definition or an exception. Read the whole section, not just the line quoted.
Fits the jobA rule for a dwelling may not apply to a commercial job, and the reverse. Location, wire type, size and equipment all change the answer.
More than one opinionA confident post or a smooth AI reply can still be wrong. Look for agreement with the code book, not with other posts.
Supervisor and permit officeOn a job, the permit office decides what it inspects to, and you work under supervision.

For the exam and for work in Texas, see which NEC edition applies in Texas. It explains the exam, the state code and the one Texas change.

A good habit: when you find an answer, write the edition and section in your notes. If you cannot find either, treat the answer as a question to ask your Journeyman, not a rule.

Starting your first year as a Texas apprentice? The US$19 Texas First-Year Electrical Apprentice Kit gives you printable pages for the first months on the job: a tool-check card, a who-to-ask list with a short stop-and-ask script, emergency-contact and heat-and-rest cards, plus a Tool budget sheet and a Tool inventory sheet (CSV).

Log your Texas Journeyman hours free. A free Tsai Electro account keeps your supervised hours, your online practice scores and your exam date in one place. Start with a five-question check to see which topic to practice next.

The free hours ledger in your Tsai Electro account lets you record each employer, supervisor, work period and hours, shows how far you are from 7,000, 8,000 and 12,000 hours, and exports a CSV or a printable summary. It is your own record, not an official TDLR record, and it does not replace the Experience Verification Form your supervising Master signs.

The exam tests whether you can find the answer in the 2026 NEC yourself. When you start studying for the Journeyman exam, the Texas Journeyman Electrician Exam Practice Pack has 1,000 original practice questions in the PSI two-part format, 10 full timed two-part mocks and step-by-step solutions for every calculation question, built on the 2026 NEC. It is exam prep only; it does not answer job site code questions. One payment of US$39, no subscription, and you can try 70 questions free with no sign-up.

Can I use an answer from an older NEC edition?

Only after you check the same rule in the 2026 NEC. The Texas exams from September 1, 2026 are referenced to the 2026 NEC, and sections and requirements can change between editions.

Are AI chat answers about the NEC reliable?

Treat them like any other online answer. If it does not give an edition and a section you can open and read, do not rely on it. Check it in your code book and with your supervisor.

Who has the final word on a job site?

The permit office for the job decides what it inspects to, and your supervisor directs your work. An online answer never replaces either one.
