Texas Journeyman Application Status: Approval, Missing Items and Your Exam Notice

Updated About 4 min read

Short answer: After you mail your journeyman application, TDLR verifies it and may contact the master electricians who signed your Experience Verification Forms. When TDLR approves your eligibility, it contacts PSI. After that approval, PSI sends scheduling instructions by email if you have an email on file. If you do not, PSI sends a postcard by US mail. For questions about your application, contact TDLR by webform or by phone at (800) 803-9202 in state or (512) 463-6599.

Your application is the first step. The exam is the next one, and the Practice Pack is for the exam. Use the wait to get ready: 1,000 original questions, 10 full timed two-part mocks scored at 70%, 299 step-by-step calculation solutions, code-book navigation aids, and a wrong-answer list with a weak-area check. US$39, one payment.

TDLR does not publish a processing time on the pages we checked, so do not plan around a fixed number of weeks. If the wait worries you, contact TDLR and ask about your application. The one-year limit that runs from the day TDLR receives your application is explained on the one-year deadline page.

Avoiding missing items

TDLR does not return documents sent with the application, and the pages we checked do not describe how it handles a packet with something missing. If you discover a missing or incorrect item after mailing, contact TDLR by webform or phone and ask how to correct the packet before sending more documents.

  1. Look over your copy of the packet. If an hours form is unsigned or a page is missing, you will see it there first.
  2. Tell your former supervisors that TDLR may call them, so they answer.
  3. If you realize something was left out, contact TDLR by webform or phone and ask how to correct your application. Keep your copy of the packet handy, and follow TDLR’s instructions before you send anything more.

Your exam notice and what to do with it

  1. Watch both inboxes. If you gave an email on the application, notices can come by email; if not, PSI sends a postcard.
  2. Create a PSI account at PSI’s TDLR scheduling page. Your first and last name must match your government ID exactly, and your name must match TDLR’s record.
  3. Book by city or postal code. PSI test sites include Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso and 11 other Texas cities.
  4. Or call PSI at (833) 333-4741 with a credit card, Monday to Friday 6:30 am to 9:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Central Time.
  5. To cancel or reschedule without losing the fee, PSI must get notice 2 days before, by web or phone. For a Monday exam, that means by Saturday.

If you used the early exam option, you still owe the remaining hours. The license is not issued until all 8,000 hours are approved and you pass the exam.

Track your application after you mail it

After-mailing tracker

A personal reminder list. Tick each step as you finish it. It does not show TDLR’s decision on your application.

  • Kept a copy of the application, every attachment and the check or money order
  • Wrote down the date you mailed the packet
  • Checking the email address on file
  • Checking postal mail for a PSI postcard if you gave no email
  • Told each supervisor that TDLR may contact them
  • If you have a conviction, allowed 1 to 6 weeks for criminal history review
  • Saved TDLR contact details: webform, (800) 803-9202 in state, (512) 463-6599
  • Confirmed the name on your government ID matches your application
  • Created a PSI account after the scheduling notice arrived
  • Scheduled the exam and paid the $78 fee
  • If you applied for early testing, track your remaining hours and confirm the deadline for submitting them

How do I check my Texas journeyman application status?

Contact TDLR customer service by webform, or by phone at (800) 803-9202 in state or (512) 463-6599. Have your copy of the application ready. When you are approved, PSI sends scheduling instructions by email, or by postcard if no email is on file.

How long does TDLR take to approve a journeyman application?

The TDLR pages we checked do not give a processing time. If you have a conviction, the criminal history review alone takes 1 to 6 weeks. Your one-year deadline is measured from the date TDLR received your application. If you applied to test early, track the deadline for submitting your remaining hours as well.

I was approved but never got the PSI email. What should I do?

Check your spam folder and your postal mail, since PSI sends a postcard when no email is on file. Then contact PSI at (833) 333-4741 or TDLR to confirm your eligibility was sent.
