Short answer: Score each part on its own, never as one total. On a full 59-item Knowledge mock you need 42 correct for 70% and 48 for 80%; on a 26-item Calculations mock you need 19 for 70% and 21 for 80%. A strong Knowledge score cannot cover a weak Calculations score, because the real exam passes each portion at 70% separately. Aim for 80% or better on each part before exam day.
A practice score only helps if it is split by part and by topic. The Practice Pack has 10 full timed two-part mocks, scored at 70% with a score by part and by topic and a line showing which part you would fail. A wrong-answer list, a weak-area check and 299 step-by-step calculation solutions show you what to rework, and retakes are unlimited. US$39, one payment.

Correct answers you need on a full mock
The counts below are our arithmetic on a full-length mock that scores all 59 and all 26 items, rounded up to the next whole question.
| Part | Items | 70% needs | 80% needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEC Knowledge | 59 | 42 correct | 48 correct |
| Calculations | 26 | 19 correct | 21 correct |
On the real exam, 3 Knowledge items and 2 Calculations items are not scored, and you are not told which ones. Scoring every item on a practice test is the simple, honest way to read your result.
The 80% line is the target from our workbook’s four-week plan. It leaves room for a bad day, a slow lookup or a few items in topics you did not drill.
Why the parts must be read apart
The FY2025 TDLR numbers show both parts stop people. 24.46% of Journeyman NEC attempts passed and 20.56% of Journeyman Calculations attempts passed. These figures count attempts, including retakes, not people, but they make one point clear: neither part is the easy one.
Here is an example of why a combined score lies. Say you get 50 of 59 on Knowledge and 15 of 26 on Calculations. That is 65 of 85, about 76% overall, and it looks like a pass. Split by part, Knowledge is about 85% and Calculations is about 58%. On the real exam that is a fail on Calculations, and the retake fee if you fail one or both portions is $78.
What to do with each result
| Your result | Next step |
|---|---|
| Both parts at 80% or higher | Keep timed mocks going so the pace holds. Book with confidence. |
| Both parts between 70% and 80% | You are on the line. Rework every miss and take another timed mock. |
| One part under 70% | Spend most of your study time on that part until it clears 80%. |
| Both parts under 70% | Go back to lessons: work Knowledge with the book open, then Calculations by hand. |
After each mock, log every miss by cause (wrong article, wrong table column, skipped step, rounding, misread question, out of time). The next page in this section shows how. If you want the topic weights behind your misses, the exam topics and weak areas page lays out the 2026 outline.

Texas Journeyman Electrician Exam Prep 2026 NEC (paperback)
Our own workbook has 2 full two-part mock exams, 59 and 26 questions, so you can score each part on its own with this calculator. Every answer gives a code path and calculation answers show each step, which makes reworking a low part faster.
What score do you need to pass the Texas journeyman exam?
You need 70% on each of the two portions, NEC Knowledge and Calculations. They are scored separately, so passing one does not make up for the other.
What should my practice test score be before I take the exam?
Our workbook’s plan aims for 80% or better on each portion before exam day. On a full mock that is 48 of 59 on Knowledge and 21 of 26 on Calculations.
What happens if I pass one part and fail the other?
The retake fee if you fail one or both portions is $78. Your score shows right after the exam, and a failing candidate gets a diagnostic report of strengths and weaknesses that tells you where to aim your study.
