Short answer: The Texas Journeyman exam is taken on a computer with a mouse and keyboard at a semi-private station. The screen shows one question at a time with the minutes remaining at the top, and you can return to any question and change your answer while time remains. A tutorial comes first, and up to 15 minutes of it does not count toward exam time. Your score appears automatically when the time allowed ends.
Knowing the screen saves minutes. Knowing the answers passes the exam. The Practice Pack gives you 10 full timed two-part mocks at the real format, 59 questions in 130 minutes plus 26 in 110 minutes, so you build the habit of watching a clock and going back to change answers. You get a score by part and by topic, 299 step-by-step calculation solutions and code-book navigation aids. US$39, one payment.

What happens on the screen, in order
- Confirm who you are. You first confirm your name, your ID number and the exam you registered for. If any of those is wrong, speak up before you start.
- Tutorial. Before the exam starts you get a tutorial. Up to 15 minutes of it does not count toward exam time. Sample questions let you practice using the keys, answering and reviewing answers.
- The exam. One question per screen, with the minutes remaining shown at the top.
- Score. Your score appears automatically at the end of the time allowed.
The Journeyman exam has two portions, each on its own clock:
| Portion | Items | Time | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEC Knowledge | 59 (3 not scored) | 130 minutes | 70% |
| Calculations | 26 (2 not scored) | 110 minutes | 70% |
Time from one portion does not roll over to the other. Non-scored items are included, their time is already added, and you are not told which they are, so answer every question as if it counts.
What the PSI screen lets you do
| You can | Source |
|---|---|
| Answer with the mouse and keyboard | PSI bulletin |
| Go back to any question and change your answer while time remains | PSI bulletin |
| Watch the minutes remaining at the top of the screen | PSI bulletin |
| Leave a comment on a question with the Comments button | PSI bulletin |
The Comments button is the only review of the written exam that PSI offers. PSI does not reply to comments, so use it only if a question looks broken, then move on.
What PSI does not publish
The bulletin does not name a “flag” or “mark for review” button, a review summary screen, or an “end exam” or “submit” button. It only says you can return to any question and change your answer while time remains, and that the score appears at the end of the time allowed. So do not plan your exam around a button you have not seen.
The fix is simple: use the tutorial. It is there so you can practice the keys, answering and reviewing answers before the clock starts. Find out how your screen moves between questions and how you get back to one you skipped. If something is unclear, ask the proctor before the exam starts, or ask PSI ahead of time.
Two more rules from the room: after the exam starts you may leave only for the restroom, with proctor permission, and you get no extra time. Electronic notepads are provided for your work.
