Short answer: Your score shows on screen right after the exam, and an official score report is printed at the test site. You need 70% on NEC Knowledge and 70% on Calculations. If you fail one portion or both, you get a diagnostic report of strengths and weaknesses, and the retake fee is $78. PSI does not publish a waiting period before a retake or whether a passed portion is kept, so check your PSI account or ask PSI.
A failed part comes with a diagnostic report of strengths and weaknesses. Use that report to target the areas you missed, then practice those areas under the real portion timers. The Practice Pack has 10 full timed two-part mocks at 59 questions in 130 minutes plus 26 in 110 minutes, a score by part and by topic with a line showing which part you would fail, a wrong-answer list and a weak-area check, and 299 step-by-step calculation solutions. Unlimited retakes. US$39, one payment.

What the score report shows
| Your result | What PSI gives you |
|---|---|
| Passed both portions | A successful notification on screen and a printed official score report |
| Failed NEC Knowledge only | Your score, a diagnostic report of strengths and weaknesses, and a printed score report |
| Failed Calculations only | Your score, a diagnostic report of strengths and weaknesses, and a printed score report |
| Failed both portions | Your scores, a diagnostic report of strengths and weaknesses, and a printed score report |
A few rules from the PSI bulletin help you read the numbers:
- Two portions, two pass marks. NEC Knowledge has 59 items (3 not scored) in 130 minutes. Calculations has 26 items (2 not scored) in 110 minutes. Each portion is passed at 70%.
- Non-scored items are mixed in. The time for them is already added, and PSI does not tell you which items they are.
- Lost the printout? You can print a duplicate score report from your online PSI account.
- Results go to TDLR for you. PSI sends all exam results to TDLR electronically.
- No written-exam review process is published. The Comments button on the question screen lets you comment on a question; PSI does not reply. The bulletin says this is the only review of the written exam available.
Retake rules: what is published and what is not
| Question | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Retake fee | $78 if you fail one portion or both |
| How many tries | As many as you need through your eligibility period |
| Eligibility period | One year from the date TDLR received your application to meet all requirements |
| Waiting time before you can book again | Not published by PSI or TDLR. Check your PSI account or ask PSI. |
| Do you retake only the failed portion | Not published. Check your PSI account or ask PSI or TDLR. |
You schedule a retake the same way as the first attempt: online in your PSI account at https://test-takers.psiexams.com/tdlnrp or by phone at (833) 333-4741.
A failed portion is common. TDLR’s FY2025 numbers show 24.46% of Journeyman NEC attempts passed and 20.56% of Journeyman Calculations attempts passed. Those figures count attempts, retakes included, not people.
Turn the diagnostic report into a study plan
- Write down the weak areas from the diagnostic report the same day, before the printout gets lost.
- Sort them by portion. On the Knowledge part your time goes into finding the right article. On the Calculations part it goes into setting up the problem and doing the math.
- Practice each portion on its own clock. Time does not roll over between portions, so a fast Knowledge part does not save a slow Calculations part.
- Use the same soft-bound 2026 NEC you will bring. Your highlights, notes and publisher tabs should be in place before test day.
- Book when your timed practice on the failed portion is consistently clearing 70%. Keep your one-year eligibility date in view while you plan.

How do I get another copy of my score report?
An official score report is printed at the test site after the exam. If you lose it, you can print a duplicate from your online PSI account.
