Reading Comprehension for the Electrical Apprenticeship Test: Find the Line That Proves the Answer

Updated About 3 min read

The reading part of the electrical training ALLIANCE aptitude test is 36 questions in 51 minutes. It measures how well you get information from written passages. The habit that helps most is simple: before you choose an answer, find the exact line in the passage that proves it. Some questions ask you to combine details or draw a conclusion, so look for the sentences that support your answer.

How to read each question

  • Read the question first. Know what you are hunting for before you read the passage.
  • Underline conditions. Words such as “only”, “if”, “not” and “except” change the answer.
  • Prove it. Put your finger on the sentence that supports your choice.
  • Cut wrong choices. Cross out choices that say more than the passage says, or that mix up the time or place.

The ALLIANCE sample page has one short passage with three questions. Use it to practice finding the sentences that support each answer.

Free tool: practice passage

Read the passage, answer the three questions and check. Each wrong answer shows the line that proves the right one. Nothing is saved.

The town of Millbrook tests its outdoor warning sirens on the first Wednesday of each month at noon. The test lasts three minutes. If severe weather is forecast for that day, the test is canceled so that residents do not mistake a test for a real warning. The sirens are meant to warn people who are outdoors. They are not designed to be heard inside buildings, so the town asks residents to also sign up for text alerts. Last year, two sirens near the river were replaced after they failed a monthly test. The town plans to add one more siren in the new park next spring.

1. When is the monthly siren test canceled?

2. Why does the town ask residents to sign up for text alerts?

3. Which statement does the passage support?

Answer all three, then check.

Does a program on your list use the GAN test? If it names the GAN Aptitude Test Battery, the GAN Aptitude Test Practice Pack (US$29) has 10 full-length GAN-style practice tests with worked keys and a 14-day Personal Experience Form planner. The questions are original, not questions from the GAN test.
