Give a short, true reason, then prove it with something you already did. A strong answer has three parts: what drew you to the trade, what you have done to learn about it, and what you understand about the work itself. Austin Electrical Training Alliance says its interview panel includes members from labor and management. South Texas JATC says its interview committee includes three management representatives from NECA and three labor representatives from IBEW. Your program may ask different questions, but this one is worth preparing.
Why this question matters
At ALLIANCE programs, a committee representing NECA and the IBEW interviews you, and the interview is part of your ranking. North Texas Electrical JATC lists interest, attitude and character among the things its committee looks at. Construction experience is not required there, but it is welcomed, so a career changer can do well with a clear reason and real preparation.
Three parts of a strong answer
- The reason. One or two sentences, true to you. A job you saw, a skill you enjoy, or steady work you want.
- The proof. What you already did: a class, a home project done safely and to code, talking with electricians, studying for the test, or getting your TDLR apprentice license.
- What you understand. You learn on the job under licensed electricians and in class for years.
Avoid answers that are only about money, or that sound memorized. Say what is true, in your own words.

Write each part, then read the joined answer out loud. It shows the word count and a speaking time at about 130 words per minute. Nothing is saved.
