Waiting for an Electrical Apprenticeship Spot in Texas: Paid Work and Prep While You Wait

Updated About 3 min read

Use the wait to pursue income-producing work and keep your test skills active. TDLR says non-exempt electrical work in Texas requires a license and must be performed through a licensed electrical contractor. Its apprentice electrician license has no experience or exam requirement and covers work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician, Journeyman Electrician, or Residential Wireman.

Checked against TDLR, Apprenticeship.gov, and the electrical training ALLIANCE on October 17, 2026.

Income and preparation options

  • Licensed electrical work: Start with the TDLR apprentice-license page, then apply to licensed electrical contractors.
  • Open apprenticeships: Apprenticeship.gov says its Job Finder can search apprenticeship listings by keyword or location.
  • Test preparation: The electrical training ALLIANCE tells applicants to review its sample questions and review similar material when a question type is difficult.

Free tool: monthly budget gap

Enter your own monthly amounts and the number of months you expect to wait.

Monthly surplus: $0.00. Total amount needed to cover the wait: $0.00.

Example with made-up round numbers: Monthly take-home income is $3,200. Housing is $1,400, food is $500, transport is $450, child care is $500, and other costs are $550. The wait is 4 months. Costs total $3,400, so the monthly shortfall is $200 and the total amount needed to cover the 4-month wait is $800.
