Short answer: Start with the article for the named setting or equipment. Then check any other system or load calculation named in the question. The map below covers the supported starting articles.
These questions reward accurate code-book navigation: identify the setting or equipment, then check the applicable article before working through the question. The Practice Pack includes code-book navigation aids, a ranked tab-these-first list and 10 timed two-part mock exams with scores by part and topic. Use the topic scores to identify whether Special Occupancies and Renewable Energy need more practice. It also has 299 step-by-step calculation solutions. US$39, one payment.
The setting to article map
| Setting or equipment | Start with |
|---|---|
| Hazardous (classified) location | Articles 500 to 505 |
| Motor fuel dispensing | Article 514 |
| Health care facility | Article 517 |
| Assembly occupancy | Article 518 |
| Mobile home | Article 550 |
| RV | Article 551 |
| Marina | Article 555 |
| Sign equipment | Article 600 |
| EV equipment | Article 625 |
| Pool | Article 680 |
| Solar PV | Article 690 |
| Emergency system | Article 700 |
| Legally required standby system | Article 701 |
| Optional standby system | Article 702 |
| Interconnected sources | Article 705 |
| Energy storage | Article 706 |
For an RV park load calculation, use 120.130. For a mobile home park load calculation, use 120.141. Those calculation paths are in Article 120, not Articles 551 and 550.
How many points ride on this
PSI assigns Special Occupancies 6 of 56 scored Knowledge items and 3 of 24 scored Calculation items. Renewable Energy, including PV and EV chargers, has 2 Knowledge items and 1 Calculation item. Each portion requires 70% to pass.
You may highlight, underline and add notes to your NEC before the exam, but you may not mark it during the exam. Use only permanent tabs made or provided by the NEC publisher; homemade or DIY tabs are not allowed.
A three-step lookup
- Name the setting or equipment. Use the map to choose the starting article.
- Name every other system. PV uses Article 690, interconnected sources use Article 705, energy storage uses Article 706 and emergency or standby systems use Articles 700, 701 or 702 as named.
- Identify the task. A park load calculation leads to Article 120. For the required sign circuit load calculation, use 120.14(F); for sign equipment rules, start with Article 600; these are two different questions.
Do not use an exception or optional calculation method unless the question directs you to it.

Choose the question you are solving. The result gives a starting article, not a full list. Check every other setting or system named in the question.

What NEC article covers EV chargers?
Article 625 covers EV equipment.
What article covers solar PV on the journeyman exam?
Start with Article 690. Also check Article 705 for interconnected sources, Article 706 for energy storage and the article for every other named system.
Where are RV park load calculations in the 2026 NEC?
Use Article 120 at 120.130 for RV parks and 120.141 for mobile home parks. Articles 551 and 550 still cover the equipment.
