Sleep for an Electrical Apprentice on Early Shifts: How Much and When

Updated About 3 min read

Plan your bedtime backward from your start time so you get at least 7 hours. The CDC says adults aged 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours of sleep, and that enough sleep lowers the risk of a car crash. That matters on early job site starts, when the drive home or to work is part of the day.

Checked against official OSHA, NIOSH, CDC and Texas pages on October 16, 2026. This page explains rules and where to get help. It is not legal or medical advice, and it does not replace your employer's safety training.

What the CDC, NIOSH and OSHA say

  • How much. CDC: ages 18 to 60, 7 or more hours; 61 to 64, 7 to 9 hours; 65 and older, 7 to 8 hours.
  • Why it matters at work. NIOSH links fatigue to nonstandard schedules and lists hot conditions among its causes. OSHA says long work hours may raise the risk of injuries and accidents.
  • The drive. NIOSH training for nurses, which is research on shift workers, not electricians, says shift work and long hours are key risk factors for sleep-related crashes, most crashes or near misses from drowsy driving happen between 4 and 6 a.m., and people who sleep 6 to 7 hours are twice as likely to crash as those who sleep 8 or more.
