Electrical Foreman to Texas Electrician: Check Your Next Stage

Updated About 3 min read

Your next step depends on your current credential and personal electrical-work record. If you already hold the Texas license required for the intended job, confirm the role with the employer and study the gaps you actually have. If your credential or experience record is unclear, take those records to TDLR before choosing training.

Start with your credential and actual duties

List the credential type, issuing authority and current status. For an expired credential or one issued elsewhere, ask TDLR which requirements apply. Gather duties, dates, hours and supervisor details for your own electrical work. Keep crew scheduling and other management duties in a separate record.

Prepare accurate examples of explaining drawings, planning crew work or documenting changes where those tasks match your experience. Use them to describe your planning and communication skills in an employer conversation.

Follow the stages in order when entering the trade

For a newcomer, the apprentice stage comes first, followed by qualifying supervised experience and later the Journeyman stage. Check where your existing credential and records place you in that progression.

  1. Begin with the apprentice stage. TDLR requires no prior experience or examination for the apprentice license. Read the complete apprentice application requirements. Work at this stage requires the appropriate license and supervision.
  2. Build and document qualifying electrical experience. For the standard Journeyman progression, the qualifying work must be under a Texas-licensed Master Electrician. Obtain verification from each supervising Master.
  3. Apply for the later Journeyman stage when eligible. Under that standard progression, 7,000 qualifying hours permit exam application; 8,000 are required for licensure. Read the TDLR Journeyman requirements and review your records before applying.

Compare the proposed role with your current job

Request the duties, supervision, pay, expected paid hours, required costs and class schedule in writing. Record the application date, first paid shift and first payday separately. Confirm the training schedule before estimating a calendar timeline.

Use the worksheet for the actual proposed role. Include any current supervisory allowance, vehicle provision and paid time in the comparison where relevant. Keep unknown figures blank until confirmed.

Choose one skill gap to study

Choose a study topic after checking your credential and records. Use a sample drawing to review plan symbols, or work through electrical theory and code-book navigation on paper. Write down one question for an instructor and keep assigned crew tasks separate from skills you have personally demonstrated.

Use the Texas career tree to explore occupation and skill nodes and choose what to study next.

Free weekly transition worksheet

Print or copy the table. Use the same weekly period in both columns. Enter take-home income after the deductions you have already accounted for. Enter only additional costs in H and E, so an expense is subtracted once. Keep unknown entries blank.

Weekly amount Current job Proposed role
I: Take-home income ________ ________
H: Household costs ________ ________
E: Additional travel, class and tool costs ________ ________
B: Amount left = I – H – E ________ ________

Change in amount left = proposed B – current B: ________

Upfront costs and due dates: ________
First paid shift and first payday: ________
Who confirmed each figure, and when: ________
Questions awaiting confirmation: ________

Questions about the move

Does a foreman title establish Texas license eligibility?

Use your current credential and personal electrical-work records to establish your next check. For the standard Journeyman progression, TDLR requires qualifying supervised experience and verification from each supervising Master.

Should I repeat entry training if I hold the required Texas credential?

Confirm the intended role and credential with the employer, then choose the gaps in your own knowledge. Ask TDLR to resolve any uncertainty about the credential or experience record.

How are the apprentice and Journeyman stages connected?

A newcomer begins at the apprentice stage, builds qualifying supervised experience and then works toward the later Journeyman requirements. Review existing credentials and experience records to identify your current stage.
