NEC 410 Recessed Luminaires and Track Lighting for the Journeyman Exam: Clearances, Insulation, Tap Conductors and Supports

Updated About 6 min read

Short answer: A recessed luminaire is installed so adjacent combustible material is not heated above 90°C (NEC 410.115). A non-IC recessed luminaire keeps at least 1/2 in. from combustible material, except at its points of support, and thermal insulation stays at least 3 in. away unless the luminaire is identified for contact with insulation (IC rated) (NEC 410.116). Branch circuit conductors may terminate in the luminaire when their insulation suits the temperature it produces. Where they do not, temperature-suitable tap conductors run from the luminaire to an outlet box at least 1 ft away, in a raceway or Type AC or MC cable at least 18 in. and not more than 6 ft long (NEC 410.117). Lighting track is fastened so each section of 4 ft or less has two supports, and each additional section in a continuous row of 4 ft or less gets one more support (NEC 410.154).

PSI lists Equipment and Devices (10 scored NEC Knowledge and 2 scored Calculations questions) as a subject area of the Texas Journeyman exam, and names luminaires in it. PSI does not name 410.116 or say how many questions cover recessed or track lighting. The Texas Journeyman Practice Pack has 1,000 original questions and 10 timed mock exams in the real two-part format, with step-by-step solutions for every calculation. Where this fits

The receptacles, switches and luminaires page covers luminaires in closets, bathtub zones and wet locations, and how luminaires are supported from boxes. This page goes into two later parts of Article 410 that are full of numbers: recessed luminaires (Part XI) and lighting track (Part XIV).

Recessed luminaires: temperature (410.115)

  • 90°C limit. Luminaires are installed so adjacent combustible material is not subjected to temperatures over 90°C (194°F).
  • Fire-resistance-rated construction. A recessed luminaire in a fire-resistance-rated assembly has its own requirements. A temperature marking alone does not show compliance; check that the luminaire and its installation are permitted for that assembly, using your code book and the listing.
  • Thermal protection. Recessed incandescent luminaires have thermal protection and are identified as thermally protected. Exceptions cover luminaires identified for use in poured concrete and luminaires whose design gives the same protection as thermal protection.

Recessed luminaires: clearance and insulation (410.116)

LuminaireCombustible materialThermal insulation
Non-ICAt least 1/2 in. except at points of supportAt least 3 in. from the enclosure, wiring compartment, ballast, transformer, LED driver or power supply, and not above the luminaire
IC ratedMay be in contactMay be in contact or covered

“IC” means identified for contact with insulation. In an insulated attic, a non-IC luminaire keeps thermal insulation at least 3 in. from the listed parts, with no insulation above it, and any barrier used to hold the insulation back must follow the luminaire’s installation instructions. An IC rated luminaire allows insulation contact.

Recessed luminaires: wiring (410.117 and 410.118)

  • Conductor temperature. Conductors have insulation suitable for the temperature the luminaire produces.
  • Tap conductors. Where the luminaire’s branch circuit conductors are not rated for that temperature, tap conductors of a suitable type run from the luminaire terminals to an outlet box placed at least 1 ft from the luminaire. The tap runs in a suitable raceway or Type AC or MC cable at least 18 in. but not more than 6 ft long.
  • Access to other boxes. A recessed luminaire is not used as the way to reach outlet, pull or junction boxes or conduit bodies, unless the box or conduit body is an integral part of the listed luminaire. The box that feeds the tap is accessible by other means.

Worked example: a basement remodel

A 120 V circuit feeds six recessed cans in a ceiling with blown-in insulation above.

  1. Insulation. The cans will be covered: they must be IC rated. A non-IC can would need insulation held back at least 3 in. and nothing above it.
  2. Combustible framing. An IC rated can may touch the joists. A non-IC can would keep 1/2 in. from the wood except at its supports.
  3. Whip length. The can is marked for 90°C supply conductors, and the branch circuit cable is not rated for that. So 90°C rated tap conductors in flexible metal conduit run from a junction box to the can. The raceway is cut to 5 ft: between 18 in. and 6 ft, so the length complies. A 7 ft raceway would not. The conductor rating and the rest of the installation still have to meet the code.
  4. Box location. The junction box is mounted at least 1 ft from the can.

Track lighting (410.150 to 410.155)

Where it goes and what it carries. Lighting track is permanently installed and connected to a branch circuit. The connected load on the track is not more than its rating, and the track is not supplied by a branch circuit rated higher than the track. It is not installed where likely to be physically damaged, in wet or damp locations, in hazardous locations, concealed, or extended through walls or partitions, and the section lists a minimum mounting height above the floor unless the track is protected or operates at low voltage. Check the exact list in your code book.

Heavy-duty track. Track identified for use above 20 A is heavy-duty lighting track, and each fitting attached to it has individual overcurrent protection.

Fastening (410.154). Track is securely mounted so each fastening holds the maximum weight of the luminaires that can be installed. Unless identified for supports at greater intervals:

  • A single section 4 ft or shorter has two supports.
  • In a continuous row, each additional section of 4 ft or shorter has one additional support.

Construction (410.155). Track is grounded, and the sections are securely coupled to keep the circuit, polarization and grounding continuous through the run.

Worked example: counting track supports

A store installs a continuous 16 ft run made of four 4 ft track sections.

  1. First section. 2 supports.
  2. Three additional sections. 1 support each: 3.
  3. Total. 2 + 3 = 5 supports.

Check yourself

  1. Minimum distance from a non-IC recessed luminaire to combustible material? 1/2 in., except at points of support.
  2. How far must insulation stay from a non-IC luminaire? 3 in.
  3. Tap conductor raceway length for a recessed luminaire? At least 18 in., not more than 6 ft.
  4. Supports for a single 4 ft track section? Two.

Write the recessed numbers in the margin

NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, 2026 Edition (softcover). Next to 410.116 and 410.117, write “1/2 in. / 3 in. / 1 ft / 18 in. to 6 ft” so the four recessed numbers are one glance. The Texas exam is open book. PSI allows a soft-bound NEC with highlighting, underlining and notes made in advance. Loose-leaf, spiral-bound and ring-bound copies are not allowed, and only permanent index tabs made or supplied by the NEC publisher are permitted; homemade and third-party tabs are not.

FAQ

How close can insulation be to a recessed light?

For a non-IC luminaire, insulation stays at least 3 in. away and is not installed above it. An IC rated luminaire may be in contact with insulation.

What does IC rated mean on a recessed luminaire?

It is identified for contact with thermal insulation.

How long can the flexible whip to a recessed luminaire be?

Where temperature-suitable tap conductors are used, they run in a raceway or Type AC or MC cable at least 18 in. and not more than 6 ft long, from a box at least 1 ft from the luminaire.

How many supports does lighting track need?

Two for a single section of 4 ft or less, plus one more for each additional section of 4 ft or less in a continuous row, unless the track is identified for wider spacing.

Can track lighting be installed in a bathroom shower area?

Track is not installed in wet or damp locations, so it does not go in a shower area.
