NEC 427 Pipeline and Vessel Heat Tracing for the Journeyman Exam: 125 Percent Branch Circuits, Ground-Fault Protection, Warning Labels and Disconnects

Updated About 5 min read

Short answer: Article 427 covers fixed electric heating for pipelines, vessels and related trace heating, such as heat tracing cable that keeps water lines from freezing or keeps process fluids flowing (NEC 427.1). The heating equipment is treated as a continuous load, so the branch circuit conductors and overcurrent device are sized at not less than 125 percent of the total heating load (NEC 427.4). The presence of electric heating is shown by caution signs or markings posted at intervals of not more than 20 feet along the heated pipe or vessel and on or next to equipment that needs periodic servicing (NEC 427.13). Ground-fault protection of equipment is required for the branch circuits that supply electric heat tracing and heating panels, with a narrow industrial exception (NEC 427.22). Each heating system has a disconnecting means that opens all ungrounded conductors (NEC 427.55(A)).

PSI lists Special Occupancies, Equipment and Conditions (6 scored NEC Knowledge and 3 scored Calculations questions) and Equipment and Devices (10 and 2) as subject areas of the Texas Journeyman exam. PSI does not name Article 427 or say how many questions cover heat tracing. The Texas Journeyman Practice Pack has 1,000 original questions and 10 timed mock exams in the real two-part format, with step-by-step solutions for every calculation. Where this fits

Space heating, baseboards and snow melting are on NEC 424 and 426 fixed electric heating. Article 427 is the same idea applied to pipes, tanks and vessels. In Texas it matters on two kinds of jobs: freeze protection on water, fire sprinkler and process lines, which many owners added after the February 2021 freeze, and process heating in refineries and chemical plants along the Gulf Coast.

The heating methods

MethodHow the heat is made
Resistance heatingA heating cable or panel attached to the pipe or vessel
Impedance heatingCurrent is passed through the pipe wall itself, which acts as the heating element
Induction heatingA coil induces current in the pipe or vessel
Skin-effect heatingA conductor inside a ferromagnetic heat tube attached to the pipe, with the current carried on the inner surface of the tube

Resistance heating cable is the method to recognize first when you study Article 427. Impedance heating has its own limits: the pipe is energized, so it is supplied through an isolation transformer and the voltage on the pipe is kept low unless the system meets the article’s alternative rules.

The rules that get tested

  • Scope. Fixed electric heating equipment for pipelines, vessels and related trace heating, including the controls (NEC 427.1).
  • Continuous load. Heating equipment is a continuous load. Branch circuit conductors and overcurrent devices are sized at 125 percent of the total load of the heaters (NEC 427.4).
  • Installation. Heating equipment is installed so the thermal insulation, weather barrier and pipe protect it, and it does not get hotter than its listing allows.
  • Identification. Caution signs or markings are posted at intervals of not more than 20 feet along the heated pipe or vessel, and on or next to equipment that needs periodic servicing, so a worker opening the insulation sees them (NEC 427.13).
  • Ground-fault protection of equipment (GFPE). Required for the branch circuits supplying electric heat tracing and heating panels (NEC 427.22). GFPE protects the equipment and is not the same as a personnel GFCI. The industrial exception needs all of these: ground-fault alarm indication, qualified maintenance and supervision, and a need for continued operation for process or equipment safety.
  • Disconnect. Each heating installation has a disconnecting means that simultaneously opens all ungrounded conductors (NEC 427.55(A)). A cord-and-plug connection can serve as the disconnect where the article allows it.

Worked example: branch circuit for freeze protection

A building owner adds heat tracing to 220 feet of exposed water pipe. The cable draws 5 watts per foot at 120 volts.

  1. Total load. 220 × 5 = 1,100 W.
  2. Current. 1,100 ÷ 120 = 9.17 A.
  3. 125 percent. 9.17 × 1.25 = 11.46 A.
  4. Result. Assuming copper conductors, 60°C terminals and no ampacity adjustment, a 15-ampere breaker with 14 AWG copper meets the 11.46 A minimum, and the circuit gets ground-fault protection of equipment. This is the exam sizing step, not a full design: also check the cable’s maximum circuit length and start-up current in the manufacturer’s instructions.

Check yourself

  1. What percentage is heat tracing load sized at? 125 percent.
  2. What is the maximum spacing of caution signs or markings along heated pipe? 20 feet.
  3. What protection is required on branch circuits for electric heat tracing? Ground-fault protection of equipment.
  4. In impedance heating, what is the heating element? The pipe itself.

Mark the four Article 427 lookups

NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, 2026 Edition (softcover). Highlight the Article 427 rules for branch circuit sizing, identification, ground-fault protection of equipment and the disconnect, and write “labels 20 ft” next to 427.13 and “GFPE exception: alarm + qualified + process” next to 427.22, so you find them fast in the open-book exam. The Texas exam is open book. PSI allows a soft-bound NEC with highlighting, underlining and notes made in advance. Loose-leaf, spiral-bound and ring-bound copies are not allowed, and only permanent index tabs made or supplied by the NEC publisher are permitted; homemade and third-party tabs are not.

FAQ

Is pipe heat tracing a continuous load?

Yes. The branch circuit conductors and overcurrent device are sized at 125 percent of the total heating load.

Does heat tracing need GFPE?

Ground-fault protection of equipment is required on branch circuits supplying electric heat tracing and heating panels, with a narrow industrial exception.

Why are caution labels required on heat traced pipe?

So anyone cutting into the thermal insulation knows an electric heater is under it.

What is impedance heating?

A method where current flows through the pipe wall itself, which acts as the heating element.

Does a heat tracing system need a disconnect?

Yes. Each installation needs a disconnecting means that opens all ungrounded conductors at the same time.

Next step: practice special equipment questions under timed exam conditions. The Texas Journeyman Practice Pack has 10 timed mock exams in the two-part format, 59 questions in 130 minutes and 26 in 110 minutes, with step-by-step solutions for every calculation. 1,000 questions, free questions to try first with no sign-up, US$39, one payment.

Next skill: space heating and snow melting. Article 427 covers pipes and vessels. For fixed space heaters and outdoor deicing and snow melting equipment, see NEC 424 and 426 fixed electric heating.
