Every section below puts the free option first. Where we name a paid product, it comes after the free ones, and the order is ours.
Before you borrow for school
The cheapest Texas routes into the trade charge little or no tuition: union JATCs carry most class costs, and many IEC employers pay tuition. Compare them in the training routes guide before you borrow for a private school.
If a school is still your plan, the Federal Trade Commission’s checklist covers what to ask (FTC):
- Completion rate: what share of students finish the program.
- Job placement: how many graduates find jobs in the field, and the average starting pay.
- Debt at graduation: how much recent graduates owe and how many are late on their loans.
- Cancellation: whether you can cancel within a few days of signing, in writing.
- Pressure: if a recruiter rushes you to sign before you have read the contract, walk away and keep researching.
The FTC also points to federal student aid first, because federal loans may have better terms than loans from banks or other private lenders. In Texas, one more question matters: whether TDLR credits the program’s hours. Only a TDLR-approved accelerated journeyman education program earns hour credit, under rules effective July 1, 2026 (TDLR).
Two tax rules can lower what you pay. The Lifetime Learning Credit is 20% of the first $10,000 of qualified expenses, up to $2,000 per return, and it covers courses taken to acquire or improve job skills at an eligible institution (IRS). If your employer has a Section 127 educational assistance program, up to $5,250 a year of education help is excluded from your income (IRS).
Tools on credit, store cards and pro rewards
Buy from the list. Get your employer’s or program’s starter tool list first and buy only that. The Austin Electrical Training Alliance list is a good model, and our first-year costs page prints it.
Know the two kinds of "no interest" offers. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains the difference (CFPB):
| Offer wording | What it means |
|---|---|
| "0% intro APR for 12 months" | Zero interest during the promotion. If a balance is left, interest starts from the end of the promotion. |
| "No interest if paid in full in 12 months" | Deferred interest. If any of the promotional balance is unpaid at the end, interest going back to the purchase date is added. |
Store cards cost more when you carry a balance. The CFPB found that 90% of retail cards reported a maximum APR above 30%, and private label cards for the top retailers averaged 32.66% in December 2024 (CFPB).
One example, in the store’s own words. The MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card lets you pick 5% off a purchase or 6 months of special financing on purchases of $299 or more, and the two cannot be combined. The financing is "No Interest if Paid in Full within 6 Months": if you do not pay the promotional purchase in full in 6 months, interest is charged from the purchase date. For new accounts the purchase APR is 31.99% (Lowe’s). A simple rule: take the 5% off only if you can pay the statement in full, and take deferred financing only if you can divide the price by the months and pay that every month.
Pro rewards are built for contractors. Home Depot’s Pro Xtra program has Member, Elite and VIP tiers that unlock as you spend, and Home Depot says Pros make up about 10% of its customers and about half of its sales (The Home Depot). An apprentice buying a first-year kit will spend far less than a contracting business, so join if it costs nothing and you shop there anyway, and let the employer’s list, not a tier, decide what you buy.
Where to compare prices. After you have the list, compare the stores you can reach, such as Lowe’s, Home Depot and Amazon. Ask your program or union hall about apprentice tool deals before you buy retail.
Check your credit for free, and get free counseling
Free reports. The three nationwide credit bureaus let you check your credit report from each once a week for free at AnnualCreditReport.com, or by calling 1-877-322-8228 (FTC). Check it before you apply for a car loan, an apartment or a store card.
Free or low-cost counseling. Nonprofit credit counseling organizations can help you build a budget, plan your debts and set up a debt management plan, and they usually offer free educational materials and workshops (CFPB). The CFPB suggests starting with the Financial Counseling Association of America or the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, or the U.S. Department of Justice’s list of approved credit counseling agencies, which you can filter for Texas.
Check them first. Ask for a written price quote and how counselors are paid. If a counselor earns more when you sign up for a plan or pay a fee, the FTC calls that a red flag (FTC). You can also check complaints with the Texas Attorney General’s consumer protection division.
File your taxes for free
| Free route | Who it fits | Where |
|---|---|---|
| IRS Free File guided software | Adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less (2026 filing season) | IRS Free File |
| IRS Free File Fillable Forms | Any income, if you are comfortable with the forms | IRS Free File |
| VITA, free preparation by trained volunteers | People who generally make about $70,244 or less, people with disabilities and limited-English speakers | IRS VITA, locator or 800-906-9887 |
| MyFreeTaxes by United Way | Self-filing for incomes under $89,000, or a VITA referral | MyFreeTaxes |
For the 2026 filing season, eight IRS Free File partners offered free software for an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less in 2025 (IRS). Open the software from the IRS Free File page, and check the limits again each January.
If you want paid software, compare it after the free routes: TurboTax and H&R Block both sell online filing.
Start retirement savings early
If your employer offers no retirement plan, a Roth IRA lets you start on your own.
- Roth IRA. For 2026 you can put up to $7,500 a year into IRAs (IRS). Roth contributions are not deductible, and qualified distributions are tax-free (IRS Roth IRAs). You can contribute the full amount to a Roth IRA if your income is below $153,000 as a single filer in 2026.
- Saver’s Credit. If you are 18 or older, not a full-time student and not claimed as someone’s dependent, you may get a credit of 50%, 20% or 10% of what you put in, up to $1,000 ($2,000 if married filing jointly). For 2026 the income limit is $40,250 for single filers, $60,375 for heads of household and $80,500 for married couples filing jointly (IRS Saver’s Credit).
- Union programs. Houston Electrical JATC says its apprentices get the same pensions as journeymen. See apprentice pay and benefits.
A worked example: a single apprentice with adjusted gross income of about $36,000 who puts $1,000 into a Roth IRA is under the 2026 Saver’s Credit limit, so that $1,000 can also earn a tax credit.
Get health coverage, free help included
Open Enrollment. On HealthCare.gov, Open Enrollment runs November 1 to January 15. Enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1 (HealthCare.gov).
Free help. Navigators are trained to help you look at Marketplace options and fill out the forms. They are required to be unbiased, and their help is free (HealthCare.gov). Find one near you with Find Local Help.
Changing jobs. If you lose job-based coverage, including COBRA, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if it happened in the past 60 days or will happen in the next 60 days (HealthCare.gov). Many union apprenticeships include health insurance. Houston Electrical JATC says it starts about five months after full-time work begins.
