Short answer: Fixed first-year costs are small: a $20 TDLR license, a $20 renewal and 4 hours of continuing education unless you are in a registered program. Tuition swings from $0 to a few thousand dollars a year by route and employer. Union scales start at $17.33 (Houston) and $21.07 (Austin) an hour. WIOA, the GI Bill and free training can help.

Why the first year is the one to plan
In a large study, Statistics Canada followed 244,820 apprentices. Those who earned under CA$15,000 in the year they registered left their apprenticeship 43.5% of the time. Those who earned CA$45,000 to CA$60,000 left 27.6% of the time (Statistics Canada). Money, more than age, predicted who stayed. A simple plan for year one is one of the most useful things you can make.
The fixed costs
| Item | Cost | When |
|---|---|---|
| TDLR apprentice license | $20 | Before your first day of electrical work |
| Renewal | $20 | Every year. TDLR sends a reminder about 60 days before. |
| Late renewal | $30 if 90 days late or less, $40 from 91 days to 3 years. After 3 years you apply again as new. | Renew on time and skip it. |
| Continuing education | 4 hours of TDLR-approved courses | Before each renewal, unless you are enrolled in a TDLR-registered apprenticeship training course |
| Hand tools | See the tools section below | First week |
| Later: Journeyman exam | $30 TDLR application, $78 PSI exam fee | When you reach 7,000 or 8,000 hours |
License and renewal facts are from TDLR. The exam fee is from the PSI candidate bulletin and the application fee from the TDLR Journeyman application.
Tuition by route
| Route | Published price |
|---|---|
| IBEW and JATC | Application $20 (North Texas) to $35 (Austin). Houston JATC says it spends about $4,500 a year per apprentice and scholarships may cover most of it. |
| IEC of Texas | $1,000 to $1,500 a year, plus $300 to $500 in books |
| IEC Dallas | 53 cents per hour worked, $40 application |
| IEC Fort Worth | $1,080 employer-sponsored or $3,150 self-pay |
| Hired directly | No tuition |
Prices come from North Texas Electrical Training Center, Austin Electrical Training Alliance, Houston Electrical JATC, IEC of Texas, IEC Dallas and IEC Fort Worth. Ask your employer to pay: IEC Fort Worth says tuition is typically paid by the employer. Details on each route: Texas electrician training routes.
Tools
Programs expect you to bring your own hand tools. The Austin Electrical Training Alliance list for first-year apprentices (tool list):
- Two pairs of channel lock type pliers
- Side cutters, 7 inch or larger
- Hammer
- Voltage tester
- Steel tape, at least 16 feet
- Small level
- Screwdrivers
- Hacksaw frame
- Knife
- Wire stripper
- Scratch awl
- Pencil
For a price check, IEC Southern Colorado sells a 15-piece apprentice bundle for $395 (IEC Southern Colorado). Ask your employer for its own list before you buy, so you buy once. If a store offers financing for tools, read whether it says "no interest if paid in full": that is deferred interest, and unpaid interest goes back to the purchase date (CFPB).
Help you can ask for
State money for registered programs
Texas law (Education Code Chapter 133) has the Texas Workforce Commission distribute state funds to registered apprenticeship training programs for related classroom instruction (Texas Education Code Chapter 133). The money goes to the program, not to you, and it is one reason registered programs cost less. Ask: "Is this program registered, and does it receive state apprenticeship funds?"
WIOA training help
The federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act pays for job training through local American Job Centers, which are the Workforce Solutions offices in Texas. Staff must give priority to people on public assistance, other people with low income and people who need basic skills help. If you were laid off, ask about the Dislocated Worker program too. Call 1-877-US-2JOBS to find your office (U.S. Department of Labor).
GI Bill for apprentices (veterans)
Veterans and reservists can use GI Bill benefits in an approved apprenticeship or on-the-job training program, and electrical trades are one of the VA’s examples (VA). With the Post-9/11 GI Bill you get a monthly housing payment while you work (VA rates):
| Months in training | Housing payment |
|---|---|
| 1 to 6 | 100% of the housing rate for your area |
| 7 to 12 | 80% |
| 13 to 18 | 60% |
| 19 to 24 | 40% |
| After 2 years | 20% |
You also get up to $1,000 a year for books and supplies. The program must be VA-approved: check it in the GI Bill Comparison Tool.

FAQ
How much does it cost to become an electrical apprentice in Texas?
The TDLR apprentice license is $20 and renews for $20 a year. Add 4 hours of continuing education each year unless you are in a registered program, your hand tools, and tuition, which runs from $0 for a direct hire to about $1,000 to $1,500 a year at IEC of Texas.
Who pays for apprenticeship classes in Texas?
Often the employer. IEC Fort Worth says tuition is typically paid by the employer, and Houston Electrical JATC says scholarships may cover most of the roughly $4,500 a year it spends per apprentice. State funds under Texas Education Code Chapter 133 also go to registered programs.
Can I use the GI Bill for an electrical apprenticeship in Texas?
Yes, if the program is VA-approved. Post-9/11 GI Bill apprentices get a monthly housing payment that starts at 100% of the local rate for the first 6 months and steps down every 6 months, plus up to $1,000 a year for books and supplies.
What tools does a first-year electrical apprentice need?
The Austin Electrical Training Alliance list includes two pairs of channel lock pliers, side cutters, a hammer, a voltage tester, a 16 foot tape, a small level, screwdrivers, a hacksaw frame, a knife, a wire stripper, a scratch awl and a pencil. Ask your employer for its list before you buy.
What happens if I renew my apprentice license late?
TDLR charges $30 if you are 90 days late or less and $40 from 91 days up to 3 years. After 3 years expired you cannot renew and apply again as a new applicant.
