Texas Apprentice Electrician, Year 3: Motors, Transformers, Troubleshooting and Getting Ready to Apply for Journeyman (2026)

Updated About 5 min read

Short answer: Year 3 is roughly hours 4,000 to 5,999. The work shifts to motors, transformers, controls and troubleshooting, and the paperwork shifts to the Journeyman application you can file at 7,000 hours. Ask each supervising Master to verify your hours on TDLR’s forms, keep your own dated log, and start exam practice before you apply.

At 4,000 documented hours, you are about 3,000 hours away from the 7,000-hour Journeyman exam-application threshold. Once TDLR receives your application, you have one year to meet all licensing requirements, including passing the exam. The Texas Journeyman Practice Pack has 1,000 practice questions on the 2026 NEC and 10 timed two-part mocks (59 NEC Knowledge and 26 Calculations questions), with a score for each topic area after every mock. US$39 once.

What changes in year 3

By year 3, you may have experience with residential rough-in or conduit work, depending on your employer and assignments. Your next goal is to build judgment while working under the required supervision. That means the parts of the trade that take it: why a motor trips, which side of a transformer a breaker protects, how to read a one-line before you open a panel. It is also when the license rules start to matter for your own plans.

A license option that opens at 4,000 hours

The Texas Residential Wireman license needs 4,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Master Electrician or Residential Wireman (or an approved career and technology education program), a $20 application and an 80-item exam (TDLR Residential Wireman page). It covers only single-family and multifamily dwellings up to four stories. Some year-3 apprentices in residential work take it as a step; others go straight for Journeyman. See our Residential Wireman guide before you decide.

How long until you can apply for Journeyman

TDLR lets you apply for the Journeyman exam with at least 7,000 hours under a Texas Master Electrician; the license itself needs 8,000 (TDLR Journeyman page). After TDLR receives your application, you have one year to meet every requirement, including passing the exam (TDLR exam page).

  1. Hours from 4,000 to 7,000: 3,000.
  2. At 40 hours a week: 3,000 ÷ 40 = 75 weeks, about 17 months.
  3. At 45 hours a week: 3,000 ÷ 45 = 66.7, so 67 weeks.
  4. From 7,000 to 8,000 at 40 hours a week: 1,000 ÷ 40 = 25 more weeks.

Check: 75 × 40 = 3,000. 67 × 45 = 3,015, and 66 × 45 = 2,970, which is short, so 67 is the first week that reaches 3,000.

What to collect in year 3

  • A signed experience verification form from each Master you worked under, while they are still easy to reach. Each Master signs a separate form.
  • Your own dated log: dates, hours, job, and the supervising Master for each period.
  • Your apprentice renewal records, including CE or training-course enrollment, so there is no gap in your license.
  • A study plan. In TDLR’s fiscal year 2025 statistics, 20.56% of Journeyman Calculations attempts and 24.46% of Journeyman NEC attempts passed (TDLR FY2025 exam statistics). Starting practice in year 3 gives you time to find weak topics before you pay for and schedule the exam.

Pay in year 3

As in year 2, apprentice pay depends on your employer or program. Ask what raises the next step: hours, classes, or a skills check. For the trade as a whole, BLS reports a national median wage for electricians of $63,190 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). We did not find an official Texas apprentice wage figure we could cite, so we do not quote one.

Working toward the Texas Journeyman exam? TDLR accepts the exam application at 7,000 supervised hours. When you start studying for it, the Texas Journeyman Practice Pack (US$39, one payment) has 1,000 questions and 10 timed two-part mock exams on the 2026 NEC.

Our own practice questions. Answers below each.

  1. You are at 5,200 hours, working 40 hours a week. Weeks to 7,000? Answer: 1,800 ÷ 40 = 45 weeks.
  2. Can hours supervised only by a Residential Wireman count toward Journeyman? Answer: TDLR’s Journeyman page asks for hours under a Texas Master Electrician, so check with TDLR before counting them.
  3. When does the one-year deadline start, and what must be done within it? Answer: It starts when TDLR receives your application. You must meet all license requirements, including passing the exam, within that year.

FAQ

Can I get a Residential Wireman license at 4,000 hours?

Yes, if your 4,000 hours were under a Texas Master Electrician or Residential Wireman and you pass the Residential Wireman exam. The license covers only dwellings up to four stories.

Next step: know your weak topics before you file. The Texas Journeyman Practice Pack gives you 10 timed two-part mocks with step-by-step solutions for 299 calculation questions. After each mock you see your score for each topic area, so year 3 study time goes to the NEC subjects that need it. US$39 once, no subscription.
