What Texas programs publish

At Houston, Austin and San Antonio JATCs, your interview score sets your rank.

~10 to 1

“There are usually about 10 applicants for every available position.” Houston Electrical JATC FAQ

$17.33–$21.07/hr

Published first-year rates at Texas JATCs while you train (Houston $17.33). North Texas JATC sets apprentice pay from its journeyman rate of $40.65/hr.

Texas apprenticeship programs we checked are IBEW/NECA JATCs: the test-first route. The rest want you hired by a contractor or enrolled first.

“Your interview score determines your rank on the list.”Austin JATC
“After interview, each applicant will be ranked.”SOTX JATC

Test practice gets you to the interview. This kit also covers which program fits you, the interview itself, and the contractor route most IEC and ABC programs require.

Aptitude Test Prep

Diagnostic; 7 lessons with worked examples; reading strategy; 3 timed simulations that get harder (Simulation C: 18 of 33 math items in the hard tier); a “where to start” rule after the diagnostic and a score-by-topic table after each simulation; Module 3c adds Simulations D, E and F plus 201 extra questions: 1,300 math and 216 reading questions in all (181 math in the main workbook, 819 in the Module 3b Practice Bank, 300 in Module 3c); every answer shows the steps and why each wrong choice is wrong.

Try a hard one. No calculator.

Question 17 of Simulation C in Module 3. The real test gives you about 84 seconds per algebra question.

Equations and inequalities • HardNo calculator

Solve for x: 6(x − 4) = 2x + 32.

Module 3 has easy, medium and hard tiers: 46 of the 99 simulation math questions are hard, and every wrong choice names the mistake behind it.

The answer that ranks, and the one that doesn’t.

“Why the electrical trade, and why now?” (point scored: Interest)

Weak

“I’ve always liked working with my hands and I heard electricians make good money.”

Strong

“I manage a retail store, and every time we have an electrical problem I’m the one who walks the electrician through the building and watches how they find the fault. I’ve wanted to do that work myself for years. Over the last six months I got my TDLR apprentice license, finished an algebra refresher, and talked with two electricians about their first year. I want a career where my skill grows every year and I can see what I built.”

Module 4 has a weak and a strong answer for all 20 questions, plus an 8-question timed mock, mapped to the seven points North Texas JATC says it considers.

Ninety days, four stages

  1. Days 1–7: the one-page Start Here checklist: license, transcript, diagnostic, resume, first 5 calls (Module 1)
  2. Days 8–30: Apply; daily test prep (Module 3); contractor calls if you are on the hire-first path (Module 5)
  3. Days 31–60: Log helper hours; practice the interview three times a week (Modules 2, 4)
  4. Days 61–90: Test, interview, recommendation letter, re-interview plan (Modules 2, 4, 5)
