Do Electrician Helper Hours Count in Texas?

Updated About 3 min read

Short answer: Not automatically. For the Texas Journeyman license, TDLR counts on-the-job training under the supervision of a Texas-licensed Master Electrician: 7,000 hours to apply and take the exam, 8,000 hours before the license is issued. Each supervising Master Electrician verifies the experience. A helper or maintenance title alone does not establish qualifying experience, so document your duties and supervision and ask TDLR to review the actual work.

Part of the Texas electrical apprenticeship path, the helper branch of the Texas electrician career tree.

What counts toward Journeyman

Item TDLR requirement
Kind of hours On-the-job training under the supervision of a Texas-licensed Master Electrician
To apply and take the exam 7,000 hours
Before the license is issued 8,000 hours
Proof Each supervising Master Electrician signs an Experience Verification Form when you apply

The test is the work and the supervision, not the job title. Hours as a helper can support an application when the duties and the supervision match what TDLR asks for and a Master Electrician can verify them.

Why there is no automatic credit

  • A helper or maintenance title alone does not establish qualifying experience.
  • Plumbing helper hours do not automatically transfer to electrical experience.
  • Advanced standing in an apprenticeship program is a separate decision by that program. Do not assume it also counts toward a Texas Journeyman license.

If you are not sure, ask TDLR to review the actual work, the supervision and your documentation before you count on those hours.

How to document helper hours

  1. Get the Texas Electrical Apprentice license early. It needs no experience and no exam.
  2. For each employer, write down your dates, your job title and the electrical tasks you did.
  3. Record who supervised you, and whether that person is a Texas-licensed Master Electrician.
  4. Keep pay stubs or W-2s that show the dates you worked. See how to reconcile apprentice hours with pay stubs.
  5. Ask each supervising Master Electrician early whether they will sign your Experience Verification Form.
  6. If you change employers, keep the records from each one. See changing employers as a Texas apprentice.

Helper experience and apprenticeship programs

Experience can also help you get into a program. Each program sets its own rule and asks for paper proof, so get its policy in writing. See credit for experience and military service in Texas apprenticeships.
