Texas Journeyman License Lookup: Confirm It Is Active on TDLR

Updated About 3 min read

Short answer: Go to the TDLR License Data Search and search by license type, license number or your name (last, first). The search covers active licenses only, so a listing there indicates that TDLR’s database shows the license as active. If your license is not found, call TDLR customer service at (800) 803-9202. Anyone, including an employer, can use the same search to check whether an electrician is licensed.

Already licensed? If a coworker or friend is still preparing for the Texas Journeyman exam, this practice pack is built for that step. It has 10 full timed two-part mocks (59 questions in 130 minutes plus 26 in 110 minutes), scoring by part and topic, and 299 step-by-step calculation solutions. US$39, one payment.

How to search the TDLR database

  1. Open the TDLR License Data Search.
  2. Pick the license type. Choose Journeyman Electrician so other license types do not crowd the results.
  3. Search by license number if you have it. It is the most exact search. If not, search by name, last name first, then first name.
  4. Narrow it if you need to. The search also takes expiration date, business name, city, county or zip code.
  5. Read the result. Check the name, the license type and the expiration date.
  6. Note the “data last updated” time shown on the page. When it was read for this page it showed 10/15/2026.

When your license does not show up

The search lists active licenses only. If you cannot find yours, work through these before you worry:

  • Check the spelling. Search the name the way TDLR has it on file. If you are searching by name, use the name as it appears in your TDLR record.
  • Check the “data last updated” time.
  • Check both conditions. The license is not issued until TDLR has approved all 8,000 hours and you have passed the exam. If either is still open, there is no license to list yet.
  • Call TDLR. If it is still not found, call customer service at (800) 803-9202. TDLR’s other number is (512) 463-6599.

TDLR does not publish how long it takes to issue the license after both conditions are met, or whether a license card is mailed or printed. Ask TDLR if you need either answer.

What to give your employer

Once your listing shows, write down three things:

ItemWhy
License numberThe exact key anyone can search
License typeJourneyman Electrician
Expiration dateChecking when the license expires

TDLR’s FAQ says anyone can check whether an electrician is licensed by searching the database by name or license number, so an employer can confirm your listing on their own. The TDLR pages read for this page do not state a duty to notify an employer or to carry the license. If your employer asks for something more, ask them what they need and confirm any legal question with TDLR.
