Texas Journeyman 5-day practice plan

A five-day plan for the Texas Journeyman exam, one session a day. Days 1 to 4 take about an hour each and use the 70 free practice questions. If you do the full mock on Day 5, set aside four hours. On Days 3 and 5, use the section for your latest score.

Haven’t done a free round yet? Start with 20 questions.

Day 1: What your score means

On the PSI exam for the Texas Journeyman license, each part needs 70% on its own. A practice score won’t tell you how the exam goes, but 70% is a useful target.

  • Below 70%: that’s common early on. Write down the 2 or 3 topics you missed most, and start with those.
  • 70% or above: a decent start. Next, see if you can keep that score on a timed round.

Twenty questions aren’t enough to know where you stand yet. Do one more round today before you decide what your score means.

Day 2: Two separately timed parts

Many people expect one long test. The exam is two separately timed parts:

  • Part 1, NEC knowledge: 59 questions in 130 minutes, a little over 2 minutes per question.
  • Part 2, calculations: 26 questions in 110 minutes, about 4 minutes per question.

A few things to keep in mind:

  1. Each part is scored on its own. You need 70% on each, and the scores are not averaged. Even if you pass Part 1, you still have to pass Part 2 on its own.
  2. Time doesn’t carry over. Any time left on Part 1 stays on Part 1.
  3. If you fail one part, you retake only that part, at US$78 per attempt.

The exam is open book with a soft-bound NEC, and the questions follow the 2026 NEC. Check PSI’s candidate bulletin for the exact book rules before exam day.

Today, time yourself on one free round: about 2 minutes per question.

Day 3: Pick your score

My last free score was below 70%

The exam is open book, but that only helps if you can find the right section fast. Part 1 gives you a little over 2 minutes per question, and a slow lookup uses most of it.

  • Pick 5 questions you missed.
  • Before you read the explanation, find the answer in the NEC yourself and time it.
  • Write down where you found it, article and section.
  • If a lookup takes more than 2 minutes, that topic goes on your list.

If you want more questions for this drill, the Texas Journeyman Practice Pack has 1,000. Code questions include NEC references and open-book lookup guidance. US$39, one payment.

My last free score was 70% or above

If you scored 70% without a timer, try the next round with one. Part 1 is 59 questions in 130 minutes, so about 2 minutes each.

  • Set a timer for 44 minutes and do one free round of 20.
  • When the timer ends, stop, even if you aren’t done.
  • Note the ones you didn’t finish. Go back to the questions that slowed you down.

A 20-question round won’t tell you how you’ll handle the whole exam. The Texas Journeyman Practice Pack has 10 full timed mocks, each split into the two parts like the real exam (59 + 26 questions). US$39, one payment.

Day 4: Calculations

TDLR’s exam statistics for fiscal year 2025 show a 20.56% pass rate on Journeyman calculations attempts. If your calculation scores are low, I’d work on those before doing another full mock.

Part 2 is 26 questions in 110 minutes, about 4 minutes each. When you work through calculations:

  • Write every step, even the easy ones. Skipping a step is where mistakes usually start.
  • Call out the unit every time you write a number: amps, volts, feet, percent.
  • Leave yourself a few minutes to check your math.

Today, do the calculation questions in the free set with every step on paper. Every calculation question in the Practice Pack has a step-by-step solution, so you can see which step went wrong.

Day 5: Pick your score

My last free score was below 70%

After Day 5, keep doing these three things each week:

  • One lookup drill on your weak topics, like Day 3.
  • One set of calculations with every step written, like Day 4.
  • One timed round, so you get used to working against the clock.

Keep track of what you’re missing. Cross off a topic when you can answer it consistently.

After a while the free questions start to feel familiar. That’s when new ones help. The Practice Pack from Day 3 has 1,000 questions on the 2026 NEC, 10 full timed mocks, and a step-by-step solution for every calculation question.

US$39, one payment, no subscription. If you haven’t started a paid mock or downloaded the PDF, you can get a full refund within 30 days (refund policy).

My last free score was 70% or above

Before you book, do at least one full mock at exam length: Part 1 with 59 questions in 130 minutes, then Part 2 with 26 questions in 110 minutes, timed separately.

Twenty questions won’t show you how your pace holds up across both timed parts. For comparison, retaking one failed part costs US$78.

The Practice Pack from Day 3 has 10 of these full mocks, each split into the two parts the same way.
