Ask your employer what footwear and clothing your site requires before you buy anything. Choose boots that fit and meet those requirements, including an electrical hazard (EH) rating where specified, and work clothes that are light and loose but still cover what the site requires. OSHA generally lets employers have workers provide ordinary work clothes and certain non-specialty safety-toe boots, while required specialty PPE such as arc-rated clothing is generally employer-paid.

Boots
- Fit beats brand. You will stand, kneel and climb for long days. Try boots on with the socks you will wear at work, and walk on a slope if the store has one.
- Look for the EH marking if your site specifies it. EH-rated footwear provides secondary electrical protection under specified conditions. It does not make contact with energized parts safe or replace de-energizing and other required precautions.
- Safety toe if your site requires it. Many sites require a safety toe. OSHA does not make the employer pay for non-specialty safety-toe boots that you are allowed to wear off the job.
- Grip. Choose a slip-resistant sole for ladders, roofs and wet slabs.
Clothes for Texas heat
OSHA’s heat guidance says to wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing where possible. Sites may still require long pants and sleeves, so check before you buy. Durable work pants with room to kneel, a light shirt you can layer and spare socks cover most days. Water, rest and shade have their own steps in the career tree.

Ask for your site dress rule before you buy. If a task needs arc-rated clothing or specialty footwear, that is PPE, and your employer pays for PPE outside the OSHA exceptions.
