IEC Texas Gulf Coast Electrical Apprenticeship: How to Get Hired First

IEC Texas Gulf Coast at a glance: a hired-first apprenticeship. There is no entrance test named on the chapter’s page. You get your TDLR apprentice license, fill out an employment application in person at the chapter office, and the chapter connects you with member contractors that are hiring. Once a member employs you, you start classes. (source)

Facts from the chapter’s apprenticeship page, checked October 8, 2026.

Step by step

  1. Get your TDLR Apprentice Electrician License. The chapter requires an active license before you can start the employment application. (source)
  2. Go in person Monday to Thursday 8 AM to 5 PM or Friday 9 AM to 1 PM, early in the week, with your license printout and a one-page resume. A resume is welcome for reference but does not replace the application. (source)
  3. Get hired by a member contractor. Your application stays active for 30 days; reapply after 30 days. (source)
  4. Start class in September or January once you are employed. (source)

Why the call list matters here

On a hired-first route, the contractor is the door. Look for licensed Houston contractors whose own careers pages name apprentice or helper roles, call early in the week, and log every call. You make the calls. The Entry Kit gives you the list, the script and the tracker: 29 Houston contractors checked one by one on October 8, 2026, every one holding an active TDLR license, 10 naming apprentice or helper roles on their careers pages.
