Houston Electrical Apprenticeship: 4 Ways In (Checked October 2026)

How to become an electrical apprentice in Houston: first get your Texas Apprentice Electrician License from TDLR (US$20, online, no exam). Then pick one of four routes:

  • Test first: Houston Electrical JATC or Galveston Electrical JATC.
  • Hired first: IEC Texas Gulf Coast, or ABC Greater Houston / CMEF.
  • School: San Jacinto College, paired with a helper job.
  • Direct hire: a licensed contractor hires you as a helper.

Right now Houston JATC applications are closed until October 31, 2026. Galveston JATC in Texas City accepts applications year round.

Every fact below links to the program’s own page. Last checked: October 9, 2026.

The 4 routes at a glance

1. Test first (IBEW/NECA JATC)

Apply, take the aptitude test (algebra and reading), interview, then get placed with a contractor from the ranking list.

  • Houston Electrical JATC
  • Galveston Electrical JATC (Texas City)

2. Hired first (IEC / ABC)

Get a member contractor to hire you, then start the classroom program while you work.

  • IEC Texas Gulf Coast
  • ABC Greater Houston / CMEF

3. School

Enroll in a college program. Classes alone do not count as the 8,000 on-the-job hours Texas requires before the journeyman exam, so pair school with a helper job.

  • San Jacinto College, Electrical Technology AAS

4. Direct hire

A licensed electrical contractor hires you as a helper or apprentice. Your hours start counting toward the journeyman exam on day 1.

  • Call contractors that name apprentice or helper roles

Which route fits you?

Do you have one full credit of high school algebra on your transcript?

Yes: the JATC route is open to you. Order the sealed transcript now. No: start with the hired-first or direct-hire route, and ask the JATC about its accepted algebra alternatives.

Can you take a paycheck as a helper starting now?

Yes: the hired-first route (IEC, ABC) and direct hire get your hours counting fastest. No: the JATC route lets you prepare for the test and interview first.

Do you already have your TDLR apprentice license?

No: get it first. Every route needs it, and IEC Texas Gulf Coast will not start your employment application without it.

Can you get to Texas City on a weekday between 9 and 3?

Yes: Galveston JATC takes applications now, while Houston JATC is closed until October 31, 2026.

Do you want classes before a job?

San Jacinto College works, but classes alone do not count toward the 8,000 on-the-job hours. Pair it with a helper job.

The hired-first move most applicants skip

  1. License first. Apply online with TDLR (US$20). Print the license page.
  2. Build a short call list. Look for licensed Houston contractors whose own careers pages name apprentice or helper roles.
  3. Call and visit early in the week with your license printout and a one-page resume. IEC Texas Gulf Coast takes employment applications in person.
  4. Track every call: date, who you spoke to, the next step. Follow up after one week.

You make the calls. The Entry Kit gives you the list, the script and the tracker: 29 Houston contractors checked one by one, every one holding an active TDLR license, 10 of them naming apprentice or helper roles on their own careers pages.

Getting ready for the JATC aptitude test? Try the free practice: algebra and reading in the published format. Your score shows right away, no sign-up.

Entry Kit: 13 Texas programs, a 7-day start plan, 6 timed simulations, 1,300 math and 216 reading questions, interview prep and the Houston contractor call list. Launch price US$49 through November 30, 2026.
