Start by separating job skills from license credit. If your military duties included electrical work, ask TDLR to assess the records. HB 2029 provides credit for verified military service, training or education toward licensing requirements, but keeps the examination requirement. If your duties were unrelated, begin with the apprentice route and build the electrical skills below. Texas HB 2029, 83rd Legislature, enrolled text

What can you bring from your military role?
Use your actual duties, rather than your rank, to build the comparison. Did you follow written procedures, account for equipment, record maintenance or hand work over to another shift? Write one example you can explain in an interview. These are prompts for your own evidence, not a claim that every veteran has electrical experience.
For military electrical duties, TDLR lists records such as a qualifying DD-214, DD-2586, transcripts, training records and a commanding officer's description of relevant duties. Its FAQ excludes electrical work on aircraft and naval ships from qualifying electrician experience. TDLR military licensing FAQ
Which skills should you learn next?
BLS lists electrical theory, mathematics, blueprint reading, code requirements and safety among apprenticeship instruction topics. Use this as a study checklist, not a license-credit assessment. BLS electrician training and work environment
| Skill node | First study task |
|---|---|
| Site safety orientation | List what you must ask your supervisor before starting an unfamiliar task. |
| Electrical theory and circuit math | Work through paper examples of voltage, current, resistance and power. |
| Electrical plan reading | Compare a drawing legend with its symbols and schedules. |
| Texas apprentice entry | Read the application steps and list your missing documents. |
How does HB 2029 change your route?
Prepare your records before estimating a shorter route. Ask TDLR how your documented military duties meet state licensing requirements. Separately, ask the apprenticeship sponsor how it assesses previous electrical experience for training placement. BLS notes that relevant military electrical experience may support a shorter apprenticeship based on experience and testing. TDLR military licensing FAQ BLS electrician training and work environment
For the standard Texas Journeyman Electrician route, you may apply to take the exam after documenting 7,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Texas-licensed Master Electrician. Licensure requires 8,000 hours. Have each supervising Master Electrician complete TDLR's experience-verification form. TDLR Journeyman experience and examination requirements

Can you receive GI Bill housing payments while training?
Eligible veterans in an approved employer training program may receive GI Bill living-expense payments. Verify the exact employer program in the VA comparison tool before counting that income. Active-duty service members cannot use these on-the-job training benefits. VA on-the-job training and apprenticeships
For Post-9/11 GI Bill apprenticeships, VA's August 2026 to July 2027 schedule uses the training ZIP code's E-5-with-dependents BAH rate. The training-stage percentages are 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20% across successive six-month periods, with 20% after two years. Your eligibility tier and monthly training hours also affect payment. VA reduces your payment if you work fewer than 120 training hours in a month or do not work the full month. You receive payment after your employer submits that month's training hours. How much time and money should you plan for?
TDLR requires no prior experience or entrance examination for its apprentice license. TDLR apprentice license requirements
BLS describes most electrical apprenticeships nationally as four or five years. That is a planning reference, not a Texas deadline or an individual credit decision. BLS electrician training and work environment
Ask the sponsor for its starting wage, paid hours, class schedule, fees, tools and wage progression. Calculate two budgets: wages alone, and wages plus the benefit amount confirmed for you. Include a later stage with lower housing payments. Do not treat an unconfirmed benefit as money available for rent.
TWC's WIOA combined state plan for program years 2024 to 2027 describes over 25,000 service members returning to Texas each year as they leave military service. This is workforce context from that plan, not a count of electrical jobs or a 2026 placement forecast. TWC WIOA combined state plan for program years 2024 to 2027
