Groundman to Apprentice to Journey: Credit and the Two TDLR Starting Points
Start with your actual status: applicant, employed Groundman, registered apprentice, or an experienced journey-level worker. Keep the job classification, sponsor-accepted training credit, program completion and any TDLR license decision in separate columns. They answer different questions.
Two starting points on the TDLR page
TDLR’s apprenticeship route specifies 7,000 hours of training
in a U.S. Department of Labor-approved apprenticeship program. Its alternative specifies 3.5 years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman
for the Texas employer types named on the official page. TDLR requires that experience to be documented and signed by the supervising electrician. Official source Checked 2026-10-26.
| Your starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| No journey-level status; considering Groundman work or apprenticeship | Find the actual apprentice entry criteria, registration process, training schedule and accepted prior-credit decision. Keep TDLR’s apprenticeship training route separate from ordinary time employed. |
| Already a journey-level lineworker | Review the alternative experience route with TDLR using the actual prior role, qualifying Texas employer, documented experience and required verification. Do not replace the role requirement with years since first hire. |
The calculation 3.5 × 2,000 = 7,000 is an arithmetic illustration only. It does not make the 3.5-year experience route equivalent to a United States Department of Labor-approved 7,000-hour apprenticeship, does not create transferable credit, and does not establish the same elapsed time. TDLR states that the 3.5-year route is experience as a journeyman lineman for an electric utility, electric cooperative, municipally owned utility, or electrical contractor in Texas. The license page does not settle an individual exemption or authorize a job assignment.
Groundman experience: request a decision on credit
SWLCAT says the individual subcommittee decides prior-experience, line-school or prior-apprenticeship credit; paystubs may be brought to request previous-experience credit. Official source Checked 2026-10-26.
For a SWLCAT route, identify the individual subcommittee and ask what previous-work records it will assess, when it decides, what credit is accepted and where that decision is recorded. Keep the amount pending until that decision exists. The FAQ does not promise a fixed number of hours for Groundman work or a line-school certificate. Its paystub reference is evidence you may bring for a credit request, not a promise that the hours will count.
A real program can have its own larger term
Bluebonnet describes its own program as 8,000 hours of on-the-job learning plus 672 hours of technical instruction; prior experience and education may shorten its generally four-year program. Official source Checked 2026-10-26.
Those are Bluebonnet’s program figures, not a replacement for TDLR’s licensing criteria and not a universal Texas lineworker term. Ask Bluebonnet which previous experience it accepts for your case. Its careers page does not publish a fixed credit award for Groundman work. Do not stop a sponsor program simply because a personal log reaches a number from a different authority.
Use this transition checklist
- Before Groundman employment: save the exact role and entry criteria. Ask which later apprenticeship route you intend to pursue.
- Before apprentice entry: obtain the actual registration or indenture requirements and request prior-credit review under that sponsor’s process.
- When a credit decision arrives: record the accepted amount, category, deciding body, date and remaining program requirements. Keep school, prior employment, OJL and related instruction distinct.
- During apprenticeship: use the existing sponsor-record and completion steps. Do not duplicate or self-award their accepted totals here.
- At journey-level or license review: use the applicable sponsor completion process and the correct TDLR starting point. Keep task authorization with the responsible employer.
What remains case-specific
A statewide automatic Groundman-to-apprentice credit amount, a guaranteed transfer award between employers and a fixed credit amount for every line school were not established by the official pages checked. Record each as a gap for the target sponsor. No promised credit, date, license, job or field qualification follows from completing this free step.
