Texas Lineworker Career Routes and Total Rewards: A Comparison Record

A job title is not a complete offer. Compare the employer type, assignment, written pay terms, benefits, travel rules and time away before choosing your next move.

Use current documents for the exact employer and assignment. This worksheet does not set wages, approve a transfer, interpret a labor agreement or guarantee a position.

Compare six mobility routes with the same questions

BLS occupation guidance distinguishes regional travel crews from local utility work and shows that both utilities and utility-system construction employ lineworkers. That is enough to require a route comparison, but it does not define any one employer’s terms.

O*NET occupation data includes Troubleman among reported titles and lists assignment coordination and testing work. Confirm the actual title, scope and qualification record with the employer rather than treating a label as a portable authorization.

Route to compare Verify the actual role Verify movement and schedule Verify the hiring or transfer gate
Utility Classification, service territory, crew, on-call scope and qualification record Reporting point, callout area, normal rotation and emergency travel Posting or transfer notice, required records and responsible reviewer
Co-op Named cooperative, classification, crew and service-area responsibilities Home base, callout area, mutual-aid travel and return expectations Current cooperative posting or internal transfer terms
Contractor Employer, customer, project, classification and controlling agreement Project reporting point, mobilization, rotation, lodging and release Written offer, project assignment and required qualification evidence
Storm Employer, activation, customer, crew role and release authority Mobilization point, expected travel window, lodging, transport and demobilization Written activation plus the controlling employment and assignment records
Troubleman Employer-defined duties, coverage area, switching or outage responsibility and qualification On-call rotation, vehicle, response area and handoff expectations Exact posting or transfer criteria and role-specific authorization
Specialist Named specialty, task boundary, training, test evidence and written authorization Where the specialty is needed, frequency of travel and renewal checks Current employer criteria, training record and assignment approval

Decision rule

Keep any missing classification, agreement, qualification, travel or approval field unresolved. A familiar title from another employer does not fill the gap.

Compare total rewards and time cost on one page

BLS work-environment guidance notes that storm response may require travel and long hours for several days. Compare the full assignment pattern, not only a quoted base rate.

Department of Labor travel-time guidance distinguishes travel during normal work hours from ordinary commuting under the stated conditions. Record the employer’s written treatment of each travel block and take conflicts to payroll, the union representative or a qualified adviser.

Department of Labor plan guidance identifies the SPD and SBC as key benefit-plan documents. Use the documents for the plan actually offered, not a verbal summary from another assignment.

Comparison field Source to request Record without guessing
Base pay Written offer, wage schedule or controlling agreement Classification, rate basis, effective date and work location
Overtime and premium time Controlling agreement and payroll policy Trigger, multiplier description, eligible hours and approver
Benefits Current SPD, SBC and eligibility notice Waiting period, participant cost, coverage limits and effective date
Per diem and lodging Assignment letter and reimbursement policy Covered dates, required proof, advance, reimbursement and excess-return process
Travel time Assignment terms, time policy and applicable agreement Each travel block, how recorded, submitted hours and payroll response
Time away Rotation and actual assignment calendar Travel days, workdays, rest days, release date and home days
Out-of-pocket cost Receipts and employer supply list Tools, transport, lodging, meals, fees and reimbursement status
Risk and uncertainty Current posting and written assignment Unconfirmed start, cancellation, reassignment, weather and return plan

Calculate separate views for gross compensation, reimbursed expenses, unreimbursed cash paid, time away and actual deposit dates. Do not merge all five into one rate.
