Get Your Master Electrician’s Experience Verification Before You Change Companies in Texas

Updated About 4 min read

Short answer: Before your last day, ask the Master Electrician who supervised you to complete and sign an Experience Verification Form for your time with them. TDLR asks you to get verification from each Master who supervised you, and each supervisor completes a new form. It is easiest while you still work together and the dates and hours are fresh. If you leave first, you may have to find that Master later through the Electrical Contractor or the TDLR license search, which is slower.

Tsai Electro is an independent learning site. Not affiliated with TDLR or any apprenticeship program.

Before-you-leave verification checklist

Check each step you have done for the job you are leaving. This tracks your own steps; it does not mean TDLR has accepted the hours.

  • I asked my supervising Master for a time to go over the form, at least a few working days before my last day
  • I brought my hours log, my planned last day and the current TDLR form
  • I gave my Master my own log of dates and hours for this period to check against their records
  • My supervising Master completed and signed the form for my time with them
  • I have a copy of my Master’s license or a letter verifying it, which the form says is required
  • I saved a copy of the signed form, outside my work phone
  • I saved my Master’s phone number or email for later
  • I saved the company’s name and contact details

At that meetingYour Master checks the dates, hours and type of work, signs, and gives you a copy or letter verifying their license
Before your last day endsMake sure the form covers your hours through your last day. If it was signed earlier, agree with your Master on when they will sign for the final days. Save the signed form, the license copy and your Master’s contact details outside your work phone

The form asks the supervising electrician for the period supervised, the number of hours, the type of work (for example residential or commercial) and a detailed description of the work, and says a copy or letter verifying their license is required. A short list of the kinds of work you did helps your Master fill that in. TDLR may contact the supervisor to verify the experience.

The US$19 Texas First-Year Electrical Apprentice Kit gives you printable pages for the first months on the job: a tool-check card, a who-to-ask list with a short stop-and-ask script, emergency-contact and heat-and-rest cards, plus a Tool budget sheet and a Tool inventory sheet (CSV).

The free hours ledger in your Tsai Electro account lets you record each employer, supervisor, work period and hours, shows how far you are from 7,000, 8,000 and 12,000 hours, and exports a CSV or a printable summary. It is your own record, not an official TDLR record, and it does not replace the Experience Verification Form your supervising Master signs.

It is exam prep only; it does not track hours, verifications or renewals. One payment of US$39, no subscription, and you can try 70 questions free with no sign-up.

Do I need a new Experience Verification Form for each Master Electrician?

Yes. TDLR says you need verification from each Master who supervised you, and each supervisor should complete a new form.

Can I get my Master’s signature after I leave the company?

Yes, you can still ask after you leave, but it can take longer to reach your former Master. TDLR says that if you cannot reach a supervisor, you may contact the Electrical Contractor the Master worked under, or use the TDLR license search for contact information.

Who signs the Experience Verification Form?

Each Master Electrician who supervised you signs for the period they supervised. You fill in your own information; you do not sign for anyone else.
