Texas Apprentice Electrician License Renewal: Fee, CE and Expired Licenses

Updated About 7 min read

Short answer: A Texas Electrical Apprentice license lasts one year and must be renewed annually. TDLR lists a nonrefundable US$20 renewal fee. Complete four hours of continuing education each cycle, or use the registered apprenticeship course option TDLR describes. Expired licenses cost more and follow separate procedures.

Launch price through November 30, 2026. The kit covers 13 Texas programs, 29 Houston contractors, six practice tests and 20 interview answers.

Renew step by step

Start with the expiration date on your license record, not the date you began work or entered a training program. TDLR says the apprentice license is valid for one year from issuance. A reminder may arrive about 60 days before expiration, but the agency also says renewal remains the license holder’s responsibility.

  1. Open the current TDLR apprentice renewal page and confirm that the page still lists the same fee and education rules.
  2. Check the name, mailing address, email and other contact details TDLR has on record. Correct outdated contact information through the agency’s manage your license option.
  3. Complete four hours of continuing education during your license cycle, or qualify for the alternative by enrolling in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course described by TDLR.
  4. Keep the course completion record or apprenticeship enrollment record that supports the route you used.
  5. Complete the online renewal application before expiration and pay the nonrefundable US$20 fee shown on the official page.
  6. Save the confirmation and payment receipt. Then check the active license record rather than assuming a payment screen alone proves renewal.

If the online system is down, try again later or contact TDLR. Avoid filing duplicate renewal attempts unless TDLR tells you to do so, because duplicate submissions make it harder to identify the record that needs attention.

How to satisfy the four hour CE requirement

TDLR says an Electrical Apprentice must complete four hours of continuing education during each license cycle. The agency’s renewal page also provides a separate option: enrollment in a department registered electrical apprenticeship training course may be used instead of the four CE hours.

These are not interchangeable with every class that uses electrical material. A general safety class, an employer toolbox talk, a school orientation or an online video does not become renewal credit merely because the subject is related. Before paying, begin at the TDLR continuing education page and confirm that the provider and course appear in the agency’s current approved system. Match the license type, course, provider and completion timing to the renewal cycle.

For the apprenticeship training alternative, ask the program to identify the exact department registration it relies on. Save enrollment documentation that shows your name, the program and the relevant period. If the program cannot identify its TDLR registration, check with TDLR before relying on the class for renewal.

Registered apprenticeship trainingThe exact program is department registered and your enrollment qualifies for the alternativeEnrollment or attendance record
Unlisted classNo automatic credit appears on the apprentice renewal pageAsk TDLR before paying or relying on it

Do not wait until the final day to resolve a missing certificate or unclear provider listing. The license holder is still responsible for timely renewal even when a reminder does not arrive.

Expired license fees and procedures

TDLR divides expired apprentice licenses into four time bands. Count from the license expiration date shown in the record.

Expiration bandOfficial fee or resultProcedure
90 days or lessUS$30Renew online through the expired license route
91 days through 18 monthsUS$40Renew online through the expired license route
Over 18 months but under three yearsUS$40Mail the current Request to Executive Director for Expired License Renewal form
Three years or moreNot renewableSubmit a new apprentice application

The 18 month boundary changes the method, not just the price. Once the license has been expired for more than 18 months but less than three years, the renewal page directs the applicant to mail the Executive Director request form with the fee. Use the form currently linked by TDLR, complete every requested field and retain a copy of the packet and delivery record.

At three years or more, do not send the expired renewal request. TDLR says the old license cannot be renewed and the person must apply as a new applicant. Review the current new application page because its questions and fee wording may differ from the expired renewal process. TDLR’s fee table lists 36 months or more as not renewable, while its text says “over three years”; if your license is right at that boundary, confirm with TDLR before paying.

An expired credential should not be treated as active while a late request is pending. Verify the current public record and ask TDLR what work is permitted in your situation before performing licensed work.

What if you change employers?

The apprentice credential is an individual license. Changing employers does not turn the old employer’s contractor license into yours, and it does not remove the need for proper supervision. The TDLR renewal page does not list a separate apprentice renewal fee merely because you change employers.

Still, keep three records separate: your personal license record, the employer or contractor credential under which work is performed, and your work hour documentation. Confirm the new business credential independently and make sure the supervising license type is appropriate. Your progress log helps you organize dates and hours, but the employer documentation required for a later license application controls.

If your apprenticeship training program has its own transfer, dispatch or reporting rules, follow those rules as well. A program transfer question is different from renewing the state apprentice license. Ask both the program and TDLR when the facts overlap.

What if you move or change contact details?

TDLR says applicants should keep contact information current so reminders can reach them. Update the agency record when your mailing address, email or phone changes. Do not assume that changing an address with an employer or school also changes the state license record.

After updating the record, retain the confirmation and check the displayed information. An address update does not extend the expiration date, replace CE or complete renewal. Treat contact maintenance and annual renewal as two separate tasks.

A practical renewal calendar

About two months before expiration, confirm your contact details and decide which education route you will use. Several weeks before expiration, complete the requirement and collect the supporting record. Before the deadline, submit renewal, save the receipt and check the active record. If the record does not update as expected, contact TDLR with your license number and submission details.

This calendar is a planning aid, not a different deadline. TDLR controls the actual expiration date. Starting early gives you time to resolve a provider listing, a missing completion record or a payment issue without letting the license expire.

If an apprenticeship program requires an aptitude test, use the aptitude and interview kit only after confirming which test that program uses.
