Short answer: You can work as a licensed Electrical Apprentice right away; that license needs no experience or exam. A Journeyman license takes 8,000 hours, about 4 years of full-time work, and the exam opens at 7,000 hours. A Master license needs 12,000 hours and 2 years as a Journeyman, about 6 years. TDLR counts hours, not years.
In detail: In Texas you can work as a licensed Electrical Apprentice right away; the license needs no experience or exam. A Journeyman Electrician license takes 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Texas Master Electrician, which is about 4 years of full-time work (you may sit the exam at 7,000 hours, about 3.5 years). A Master Electrician needs 12,000 hours and at least 2 years holding a Journeyman license, so about 6 years from the start. A Residential Wireman needs 4,000 hours, about 2 years. These year figures are our estimate at 2,000 working hours a year; TDLR counts hours, not years.

What makes it take longer
- Hours that cannot be verified. Every supervising Master Electrician signs an Experience Verification Form. If a former supervisor cannot be reached, TDLR suggests contacting the electrical contractor they worked for, or using the TDLR license search.
- Part-time or seasonal work. At 1,500 hours a year, 8,000 hours takes about 5.3 years.
- Failing the exam. In early 2026, first-time early Journeyman candidates passed 67.23% of the time and repeat takers 19.72% (TDLR staff report, May 12, 2026). Every retake costs $78 and time inside your one-year application window.
- Waiting for approval. You apply to TDLR by mail first, and TDLR must approve you before PSI lets you book. A criminal history review can add one to six weeks.
What can make it faster
- Test at 7,000 hours. TDLR lets you apply and take the Journeyman exam before you reach 8,000 hours. Passing early means the license is issued as soon as your hours are complete.
- Join an apprenticeship program. In the same TDLR report, candidates in apprenticeship programs passed 83.54% of first attempts.
