Short answer: PSI needs one valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID or passport, that shows your printed name, photo, signature or fingerprint, date of birth and expiration date. It must match all the information TDLR sent PSI. An expired driver’s license is accepted only with a valid Texas DPS temporary permit. If you cannot bring a proper ID, call PSI at (833) 333-4741 at least 3 weeks before your appointment, because showing up without one forfeits the fee.
The ID check gets you through the door. The Practice Pack is for preparing for the two exam portions. The Practice Pack has 10 full timed two-part mocks at the real format, 59 questions in 130 minutes plus 26 in 110 minutes, scored by part and by topic. It also has 299 step-by-step calculation solutions and code-book navigation aids. US$39, one payment.

What PSI looks for on your ID
| What PSI checks | The rule |
|---|---|
| Who issued it | A government. Examples: driver’s license, state ID, passport |
| Is it valid | It must be valid. Expired driver’s licenses have one narrow exception, below |
| Printed name | Must be on the ID and match what TDLR has on file exactly |
| Photo | Must be on the ID |
| Signature or fingerprint | One of the two must be on the ID |
| Date of birth | Must be on the ID |
| Expiration date | Must be on the ID |
| Match to TDLR | Everything must match the information TDLR sent PSI |
You bring one valid government-issued ID. At check-in PSI takes a digital copy of it. If your ID lacks required information, you may be asked for other valid ID. If you are unsure whether yours qualifies, call PSI before the appointment.
Expired Texas license and the DPS temporary permit
The only expired ID PSI accepts is an expired driver’s license paired with a valid Texas DPS temporary permit. It works both ways:
- The expired DPS license is accepted only with the valid temporary permit.
- The temporary permit is accepted only with the expired DPS license.
Bring both together. One without the other does not get you in. If your license expires between booking and exam day, check this before you leave home, not in the parking lot.
If your ID will not pass
- Call early. If you cannot provide the required ID, call PSI at (833) 333-4741 at least 3 weeks before your appointment.
- Do not just show up. Arriving without the required ID, without having told PSI, counts as a missed appointment. Your registration becomes invalid and the exam fee is forfeited.
- Fix the name first. If the name on your ID is different from your TDLR record, the ID check fails even if every other field is there. PSI and TDLR do not publish a name-change step on the pages we read, so call PSI, or TDLR at (800) 803-9202 (in state) or (512) 463-6599, and ask what they need.
- Rebook if you must. Showing up without the required ID, without notifying PSI, counts as a missed appointment and forfeits the $78 exam fee. You may retake the exam as many times as needed during your eligibility period; a $78 retake fee applies if you fail one or both portions.
Arrive 30 minutes early. Sign-in and the ID check happen in that window, and late arrivals are not admitted.

Will your ID pass the PSI check?
Hold your ID in your hand and tick only what you can see on it. Any box you cannot tick is a no.

- Valid on exam day, or an expired Texas driver’s license that I will bring with a valid Texas DPS temporary permit
- Shows my printed name
- Shows my photo
- Shows my signature or fingerprint
- Shows my date of birth
- Shows an expiration date
- My first and last name match all information TDLR sent PSI exactly

What ID do I need for the Texas journeyman electrician exam?
One valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID or passport, showing your printed name, photo, signature or fingerprint, date of birth and expiration date. It must match all the information TDLR sent PSI.
Can I use an expired driver’s license at the PSI test center?
Only an expired driver’s license together with a valid Texas DPS temporary permit, and the permit only together with the expired license. Any other expired ID will not get you in, so call PSI at least 3 weeks ahead if that is all you have.
What happens if I show up without the right ID?
Showing up without the required ID, without telling PSI first, counts as a missed appointment. The registration becomes invalid and the exam fee is forfeited, so call PSI at (833) 333-4741 at least 3 weeks before the appointment instead.
