Short answer: PSI offers the Texas journeyman exam in English and Spanish at no extra cost, and you choose the language when you schedule. For any other language, you request a translation from PSI and pay the cost PSI quotes for each translation. You may also bring a bound word-to-word translation dictionary with no pictures, no definitions and no markings.
The exam format is the same in English and Spanish: NEC Knowledge (59 items, 130 minutes) and Calculations (26 items, 110 minutes), and each part needs 70% to pass. The Practice Pack has 10 full timed two-part mocks in that exact format, a score by part and by topic, 299 step-by-step calculation solutions and code-book navigation aids with a ranked tab-these-first list. US$39, one payment.

Your language options
| Language | How to get it | Extra cost | Where to read the rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | Choose English when you schedule | None | PSI Bulletin 1682 |
| Spanish | Choose Spanish when you schedule with PSI | None | PSI Bulletin 1682 and the Spanish candidate bulletin |
| Any other language | Request a translation from PSI | The cost PSI quotes, for each translation | Contact PSI before you book |
The exam fee is $78 for both portions. English and Spanish have no added language fee. For another language, ask PSI for the translation cost before you book; PSI quotes a cost for each translation.
The translation dictionary rule
PSI allows a bound word-to-word translation dictionary. The rules are strict:
- Bound and word-to-word only.
- No pictures and no definitions. A dictionary that explains words is not allowed.
- No extra papers tucked inside.
- No highlighting, underlining, indexing or marking, before or during the exam.
Breaking these rules can mean losing the dictionary, the end of your exam and a report to TDLR. Look through your dictionary page by page before exam day and leave anything doubtful at home.
Your NEC book follows separate rules. Questions follow the 2026 NEC, and the book must be soft-bound. Highlighting, underlining and notes made before exam day are allowed. Only permanent tabs made or provided by the NEC publisher are allowed, the NEC Handbook is not, and you cannot mark the book during the exam.
Steps to book in your language
- Get approved by TDLR. PSI then sends you an email with scheduling instructions, or a postcard if TDLR has no email for you.
- Read the bulletin you will use. PSI Bulletin 1682 for English. A Spanish candidate bulletin also exists; the link is in the sources below.
- Create your PSI account with your first and last name exactly as on your government ID. Your name must also match TDLR’s record.
- Pick your language when you schedule, online or by phone at (833) 333-4741. For a language other than English or Spanish, ask PSI for the translation and its quoted cost first.
- Know the 2-day rule. To cancel or reschedule without losing your fee, PSI must receive your notice at least 2 days before the appointment, by web or phone. Voicemail and email do not count. For a Monday exam, the deadline is Saturday.
- Exam day: arrive 30 minutes early with one valid government ID that matches TDLR’s information.
A disability accommodation is a separate PSI request; see Texas Journeyman Exam Accommodations: How to Ask PSI Early.

Can I take the Texas journeyman electrician exam in Spanish?
Yes. PSI offers the exam in English and Spanish at no extra cost, and you choose the language when you schedule. A Spanish candidate bulletin is also published by PSI.
Can I bring a dictionary to the Texas electrician exam?
You may bring a bound word-to-word translation dictionary. It cannot have pictures or definitions, extra papers, or any highlighting, underlining, indexing or marking. Breaking the rule can mean losing the dictionary, ending the exam and a report to TDLR.
What if my language is not English or Spanish?
