Texas Lineworker CDL and Training Checklist

Short answer: Before you pay for a lineworker school or a CDL course, check four things against official pages: what your target program asks for, CLP versus CDL timing, whether the training provider is on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, and who will record your training and authorize your tasks. Print this page or copy the tables into your own notes.

1. Self check with official links

CheckWhere to confirmMy answerChecked on
Which program or employer am I applying to, and what does its page list?Texas lineworker official applications and job pages__________
Does the posting ask for a Class A CDL, a CLP, or neither at this step? The target posting, then Texas DPS CDL steps__________
Do I need Entry-Level Driver Training, and is my provider listed?FMCSA ELDT, Training Provider Registry__________
Does the posting ask for a DOT medical card?FMCSA DOT medical exam__________
Does the work need a TDLR license or an exemption?TDLR Journeyman Lineman, TDLR exemptions__________

2. CLP and CDL are different credentials

A CLP is a commercial learner permit. A CDL is the commercial driver license. Programs and employers can ask for either one at different milestones, so write down which credential each step asks for and where it says so.

Common mistakeWhat to do instead
Treating a CLP as if it were a CDL.Record the exact credential each milestone asks for: apply, start, or first field assignment.
Paying for CDL training before checking the provider.Search the provider by exact name in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry first.
Using one employer’s CDL timing for another. Each target sets its own timing. Keep one record per target.
Skipping the class and endorsements.Texas DPS separates CDL classes and endorsements. Copy what the posting names.
Forgetting the medical card.Several Texas postings list a DOT medical card with the Class A CDL. Check the target posting.

3. If you do not enroll in a school first

If this is trueThen do this
A target posting accepts beginners and lists its requirements.Meet the listed requirements and apply through the official page.
The posting asks for a CDL before you apply.Plan the CLP, ELDT and CDL steps first, using registered providers.
The posting asks for a CDL later, after hire or before field work.Apply now and write down the deadline the employer gives you.
No beginner opening is posted right now.Track the official careers pages and the apprenticeship pages on a set date each week.
You still cannot tell which route fits.Use the Texas lineworker entry status decision tree and ask the program directly.

4. Supervision and training: what to confirm

OSHA 1910.269 requires training that pertains to job assignments and says the employer ensures proficiency. The standard notes that training records are one way to track it. Your employer or program decides which training applies to you and who delivers it.

Ask the employer or programAnswerSource or person
Who is my supervisor for field training?__________
Which training applies to my first assignment?__________
Which rescue training applies to my assignment, and who delivers it?__________
Which outside records will you accept, and who reviews them?__________

This page does not teach climbing, rescue, energized work or equipment operation. Learn them only in supervised training from your program or employer.

5. Training record and supervisor confirmation

FieldFill in

Record owner (employer, school or sponsor)_____
Supervisor or reviewer who confirmed it_____
Review date and where the record is kept_____

Record what the employer actually confirmed. Do not sign on its behalf. For a full crew record review, see the Texas line crew qualification record audit.

6. Task authorization tracker

Task or equipmentStatusWho authorized itDateRecord

_____Not started / In training / Authorized_______________
_____Not started / In training / Authorized_______________

Applying, getting hired and being authorized for a task are three separate decisions. Mark a task authorized only when the responsible employer confirms it. More on this in Texas lineworker legal start: job, employer and task.
