Short answer: You need one of two things each license cycle. TDLR says an apprentice must complete 4 hours of continuing education to renew, and that electrical apprentices may instead enroll in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course. So if you are enrolled in an apprenticeship class registered with TDLR, that can stand in for the 4 CE hours; if you are not, or you are not sure your class is registered, plan on the 4 hours of CE. For the fee and the renewal steps, see the full renewal guide.

Which route fits you
Renewal route check
Answer for your current license cycle. The apprenticeship course route only comes up when you are enrolled and your course is registered. TDLR decides what it accepts.
- Are you enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship training course this license cycle?
- Has your program told you its course is registered with TDLR?
The two routes side by side
| Route | What TDLR says | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| 4 hours of continuing education | Required each license cycle to renew | The completion record for your course |
| Department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course | Electrical apprentices may enroll in one instead of the 4 CE hours | Your enrollment record for the cycle; a written note from the program that the course is registered is useful to keep |
Classes that are not a department-registered apprenticeship course do not become renewal credit just because they cover electrical topics. If you are unsure, ask TDLR before you rely on a class.
Finish your route early in the cycle, not in the last week. Your license is valid for one year from the date of issuance; see the apprentice license expiration check. For fees, expired licenses and every step, see Texas apprentice electrician license renewal.
