Free question 1: At a solvent dip tank, ignitable concentrations of flammable vapors can exist under normal operating conditions. How is this location classified?
- Class I, Division 1
- Class I, Division 2
- Class II, Division 1
- Class III, Division 2
Show the answer
Answer: A. Class I, Division 1
Class I covers flammable gases and vapors. Division 1 applies where ignitable concentrations can exist under normal operating conditions; Division 2 is for abnormal conditions only. Class II is combustible dust and Class III is ignitable fibers.

Free question 1: A building owner wants the main disconnect for a small shop placed where an electrician can reach it. Under the NEC definition, which description matches equipment that is readily accessible?
- It can be reached quickly for operation or inspection without climbing over or removing obstacles, using tools other than keys, or using a portable ladder
- It admits close approach because it is not guarded by locked doors, elevation or other effective means
- It is visible from the equipment it controls and not more than 50 ft away
- Its operating handle is no higher than 6 ft 7 in above the floor
Show the answer
Answer: A. It can be reached quickly for operation or inspection without climbing over or removing obstacles, using tools other than keys, or using a portable ladder
Readily accessible is the stricter of the access definitions: ready access must not depend on climbing, moving obstacles, tools (other than keys) or portable ladders. Option 2 is the old pre-2020 wording of plain 'accessible (as applied to equipment)', which today only means the equipment can be reached for operation, renewal and inspection; option 3 is 'in sight from', and option 4 is a height limit for switch and overcurrent device handles, not a definition.

Free question 1: A dwelling has a metal underground water pipe that is in direct contact with the earth for 25 ft, and it is used as a grounding electrode. What else does the NEC require for this grounding electrode system?
- Nothing further, because 25 ft of earth contact exceeds the 10 ft minimum
- The water pipe must be supplemented by an additional electrode of a type recognized by the Code
- The water pipe must be replaced by a concrete-encased electrode
- A dielectric union must be installed where the pipe enters the building
Show the answer
Answer: B. The water pipe must be supplemented by an additional electrode of a type recognized by the Code
A metal underground water pipe can serve as an electrode, but the Code always requires it to be supplemented by another recognized electrode (for example a rod or a concrete-encased electrode), because the piping may later be replaced with plastic. A dielectric union would interrupt the electrode path.
