In detail: A useful Texas Journeyman practice test copies the real PSI format: two separately timed parts on the 2026 NEC, 59 NEC Knowledge questions in 130 minutes and 26 Calculations questions in 110 minutes, with a 70% pass line on each part. You can start 20 free questions here with no sign-up. Then practice in timed blocks, with your own soft-bound 2026 NEC open beside you.

Format facts last checked October 1, 2026 against the PSI candidate information bulletin for TDLR electricians (updated September 15, 2026).

Check any practice test against the 2026 format

Many free Texas practice tests online still use the format from before March 2025, when the exam was a single part, or still cite the 2023 NEC. Before you spend hours on a question bank, check four things:

CheckCurrent Texas Journeyman exam
PartsTwo: NEC Knowledge and Calculations, timed separately
Length59 questions in 130 minutes, then 26 questions in 110 minutes
Pass line70% on each part, not an average of both
Code edition2026 NEC, from September 1, 2026

A test that gives one combined score can tell you that you passed when you would actually fail the Calculations part. Score each part on its own.

How to use practice tests (a 4-step routine)

  1. Baseline: take a short untimed set to see which areas you miss. Note the topic area of every wrong answer, not just the score.
  2. Open-book drills: for every question, find the answer in your own NEC before you check the key. Write down the article, section and table you used. Your score on exam day depends on how fast you can find things, not on memorizing them.
  3. Timed parts: once your drill accuracy is steady, do full timed parts. Part 1 allows about 2.2 minutes per question and Part 2 about 4.2 minutes per question.
  4. Review by area: PSI’s real score report lists strengths and weaknesses by area if you fail. Do the same with your practice results, then spend the next week on your two weakest areas.

Question 1: NEC Article 100 (Accessible, Readily)

A building owner wants the main disconnect for a small shop placed where an electrician can reach it. Under the NEC definition, which description matches equipment that is readily accessible?

  • A. It can be reached quickly for operation or inspection without climbing over or removing obstacles, using tools other than keys, or using a portable ladder
  • B. It admits close approach because it is not guarded by locked doors, elevation or other effective means
  • C. It is visible from the equipment it controls and not more than 50 ft away
  • D. Its operating handle is no higher than 6 ft 7 in above the floor

Answer: A. Readily accessible is the stricter of the access definitions: ready access must not depend on climbing, moving obstacles, tools (other than keys) or portable ladders. Option B is the old pre-2020 wording of plain ‘accessible (as applied to equipment)’, which today only means the equipment can be reached for operation, renewal and inspection; option C is ‘in sight from’, and option D is a height limit for switch and overcurrent device handles, not a definition. Code reference: NEC Article 100 (Accessible, Readily) (2026 NEC).

Question 2: NEC 210.52(E)(1)

For a new one-family dwelling built at grade level, what is the minimum outdoor receptacle outlet requirement?

  • A. One receptacle outlet anywhere on the exterior
  • B. At least one receptacle outlet at the front and one at the back, each readily accessible from grade and not more than 6 1/2 ft above grade
  • C. One receptacle outlet on each exterior wall, at any height
  • D. Outdoor receptacle outlets are required only where a deck or porch is built

Answer: B. A one-family dwelling at grade needs at least one outdoor receptacle outlet at the front and at the back, readily accessible from grade and not more than 6 1/2 ft above grade. Decks and balconies carry their own separate requirement. Code reference: NEC 210.52(E)(1) (2026 NEC).

Question 3: NEC 110.26(A)(3)

A 7-ft-tall 480-volt switchboard is installed in an electrical room. What is the minimum height of the working space in front of it?

  • A. 6 ft
  • B. 6 1/2 ft
  • C. 7 ft (the height of the equipment)
  • D. 8 ft

Answer: C. The working space must be clear from the floor to a height of 6 1/2 ft or the height of the equipment, whichever is greater. Here the switchboard is 7 ft tall, so 7 ft governs. Code reference: NEC 110.26(A)(3) (2026 NEC).

Where most candidates lose points

TDLR’s fiscal year 2025 figures show 24.46% of Journeyman NEC Knowledge attempts and 20.56% of Calculations attempts passed. In TDLR’s May 2026 staff report, first-time takers averaged 13.15 of 24 scored points on Calculations, below the 70% line. If your practice scores are close, put the extra hours into calculations first. Our Calculations part guide covers the areas and methods.

FAQ

Is there a free Texas Journeyman Electrician practice test?

Yes. Our Texas Journeyman practice offers 20 questions free with no sign-up, each with an explanation and an NEC article reference. Check that any free test you use follows the two-part 2026 format.

Are practice test questions the same as the real exam?

No. Real PSI questions are confidential. Good practice questions copy the format, topic areas and code edition, so you build speed with the book rather than memorizing answers.

What score should I get on practice tests before booking?

Aim to score well above 70% on each part separately, under real time limits, using only your soft-bound NEC. A score just over 70% leaves no margin for exam-day nerves.

Is there a Texas Journeyman practice test PDF?

The practice pack includes a printable workbook. A PDF is fine for drills, but time yourself in a browser or with a timer too, because pacing is part of the exam.

Do I need the 2026 NEC for practice?

Yes. Texas exams are referenced to the 2026 NEC from September 1, 2026, and some sections moved between editions. Practicing with an older book teaches you the wrong page locations.
